I guess so…but there just isn't the history of suppression behind it. Hence, it's merely comedy. But back in the days, blackface was more than just that. It was a forum for white folks AND black folks to systematically dehumanize, criminalize, and stereotype an already downtrodden social class, thus making their struggle as people irrelevant and laughable. In short, it was fucked.

Spike Jones did a movie on the subject about 10 years ago, called Bamboozled. I'm generally a fan of his work. It explored what would happen today, were blackface reinstituted as a staple in the media. (Not that it doesn't still go on in certain ways, with dehumanizing media portrayals still very much part of today's corporate media blitz…certain mainstream rappers come to mind, actually, which is a whole 'nother story ;)

I don't think that Madness is racist at all. (Though apparently he is a tad bit sexist lol…) I think that he perhaps does not know (or care) about the social implications of blackface. But maybe that's his whole point, with the “I'll paint my face however I want” attitude. I respect it. Still, I question if it will hurt more than help him with the social stigma and all that painful past that the blackface invokes. And it certainly doesn't make the juggalos look good lol.
