In a book addressed to his son, ta nehisi coates writes about racism in a way that was really compelling.

Typically we are taught that because we have different races that seem different and foreign, we have racism. His argument is that racism (specifically race based slavery and its descendents) created the concept of race. He tells his son early on in the book that they are not black people, and the racist perpetrators of violence are not white. He describes them as “people who were raised to believe they are white”.

It’s an interesting idea. I dunno. Which are you?

I misvoted now that I think about it…. I suppose that I was raised to believe I was white.

My dad is mostly Scottish/British/Irish, but decided one day when I was about 19 that he should tell me that his grandmother was 100% pure Spanish. It explained a lot, but I had always “identified as white”. Well, on paper, when asked. I identified as an individual and still do. But it was still quite the shocker.

My mom was adopted and the government cant tell her certain info about her birth parents, except that they were migrant workers and unfit parents. She was adopted by a wealthy rich white family, but that’s another story…. anyway, my wife bought her those pricey ancestry kits.. they screwed it up the first time, so we had to do it again.. then they replied that she was mostly Scandanavian and a touch Asian. Weird shit, as she looks as dark and native as a Southwestern tribe member. So I dunno….

My dad allowed two black kids to basically be raised at our home with my brothers and I. He had racist leanings, but still allowed them to live there. Also, coached three black kids on his baseball team (we were champions for three years with those kids’ help). Now he’s adamant about voting for Trump. Sad shit.

My skin is white. So I am white. Other’s identify me as black. I identify as a pretentious race above the rest that isn’t defined by skin color.
