PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — Fourteen businesses in north Portland received targeted, threatening messages last Thursday from a group calling for them to leave the neighborhood.
“You have been targeted by the juggalo family to get … out,” the notice reads. “Vacate or … our …”
Business owners, including Hopworks Urban Brewery manager Spencer Kollman, said they are scared, after the notices were plastered on front doors and store fronts along N Williams St. and N. Shaver St.
Kollman said he came into work Thursday to find dozens of the same flyer, which has been edited for graphic language, in the storefront.
“So I don’t know what we did to make them angry or anybody else to make them angry,” he said. “This is straight up vulgar.”
In addition to the flyers, Kollman said he has noticed an increase in car break-ins.
“There’s broken glass everyday,” he said.
It remains unclear who made or distributed the flyers. Police could not confirm whether the fliers were in any way connected to the increase in car prowls.
The issue of gentrification
In recent years, north Portland’s Williams St. area has seen a sharp increase in property values, construction, and new businesses — including upscale boutiques and restaurants — moving to the area.
Tracy Sullivan, who lives near the intersection of N Williams St. and N Shaver St., said she understands the opposition to gentrification.
“I think it’s hard, I feel bad,” she said. “At the same time, people have been living here for a long time [and] it’s harder to afford it.”
What’s a Juggalo?
The name “Juggalo” is associated with fans of the hardcore hip hop group Insane Clown Posse, and their label Psychopathic Records. The name itself arose during a 1994 live performance.
People who subscribe to the Juggalo subculture are known for wearing clown makeup, drinking the soft drink Faygo, listening to hardcore or “horrorcore” hip hop, and have been referred to as a “family” in popular media.

1. This sounds weird to me. What do you think the most likely explanation is? Someone who thinks they can scare people by pretending to be a Juggalo? Some Juggalo who doesn’t like yuppies and wants to make it seem like he’s got backup? Or are there really a bunch of Juggalos in Portland who are trying to fight gentrification?
2. Fill in the blanks: YOU HAVE BEEN TARGETED BY THE JUGGALO FAMILY TO GET THE _________ OUT. VACATE OR ________ OUR ___________.
I’ll say: Christmas decorations, offend, sensibilities.

This story has gone national, it was picked up by USA Today: http://www.usatoday.com/story/…../19259357/
The headline reads:
Group claiming Juggalo link threatens Oregon businesses
I think this is pretty fucking cool, y’all. The headline is very clear about the fact that this is only someone who is claiming to speak for Juggalos, rather than giving us the bone by saying (or giving the impression) that it’s known that Juggalos were responsible. Certainly not what I would have expected from USA Today, which isn’t exactly known for being even handed and fair like this instead of sensationalistic- and I mean, a headline like “Juggalo gang members threatening Oregon businesses” probably would have gotten more clicks. There have been a lot of longform, entertainment type articles in recent years where some journalist goes to the Gathering and ends up having a good time and portraying Juggalos in a positive light (starting with Camille Dodero’s piece in the Village Voice), but this is the first time I can remember seeing us get a fair shake in straight up news article. I wonder if the Camille Dodero-type articles are filtering down and affecting how other journalists approach straight news stories that involve Juggalos in a positive way.

I mentioned this on the homepage story, but the local radio show I listen to, The News Junkie, Covered this, and was questioning if it was real. Then they read what I think was a spoof letter “written by the juggalos” which was clearly not written by a juggalo.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-news-junkie/id324682003?mt=2
It aired 11/19, and it was roughly 1 1/2 hrs in I think. Im not too savy with editing, or whatever, but the link is above if you care to listen to it. its pretty amusing but they clearly made a joke of it.
I'll fuck you till you love me, Faggot!

Or maybe the “juggalos” got to USA Today…and are covering their tracks….
Holy shit, I think you might be right. The more I think about it, the more it’s starting to freak me out. Just the other day, I saw my neighbor and I was like “Hey man, how’s it going?” And instead of saying “Juggalos are gang members” or “ICP are the worst band in history” all he said was, “Pretty good, how about you?” WTF?! Could the Juggalos have gotten to him too? How far does this conspiracy go?
