After years of work, want, putting it off, and just being a lazy piece of shit, I finally started submitting applications to teach English overseas. I am applying in Korea and hopefully Japan. If I get hired some of you muthafackos are going to have to come and visit me!

That’s great! Hopefully this is something you enjoy doing instead of just something that just pays well. I teach at programming conferences because it is something I completely enjoy. Programming is my job and my hobby. There is no better career choice than one where the work is what you love to do.
If you love to teach, the real money is in private tutoring for English overseas. Get your experience and foot in the door, then expand your market. There is also a market for complete immersion – not only teaching the language but also the entire culture and history of countries that speak that language. So much room to expand from the humble starting point of just teaching English. It is a career that, at this point, has a very soft ceiling.
… and over apply! Don’t limit yourself to just a few places. Apply everywhere. Even at places you may not think you will get accepted. I would suggest corresponding with HR departments at the various places before applying. It is always better when they recognize your name already when they are reviewing applications.
… and good luck!

And heads up, “…Japan’s reputation as having some of the harshest marijuana laws in the developed world is well deserved. Less than a gram of pot can get you five years with hard labor…”

and “…the Republic of Korea (ROK) is home to some of the strictest cannabis laws on the planet…”

yeah, murder and securities fraud are still illegal there, too. whoda thunk.basicly, itll be about the same as it was before…
Wrong. To reiterate, according to High Times “…Less than a gram of pot can get you five years with hard labor…” in parts of Asia:

Just cuz ur married to Mary Jane doesn’t mean the rest of the world recognizes your domestic partnership equally. Thought Pigg should know rather than end up breaking rocks at the base of an active volcano without knowing relevant facts about global weed laws. For further information about “Japan’s draconian marijuana laws” and how “laws against marijuana in South Korea, China and other East Asian countries are even stricter” here’s a recent Japan Today article:

I appreciate the willingness to save me, but I don’t intend to get busted with any tree or any other drugs for that matter when I am overseas. If anything I’ll just get really drunk. They sell bottles of alcohol for like $1.
@carnivalkilla44 I would be teaching English to speakers of other languages. Most likely in a private or public school setting.

I think when he said, “before”, he meant the last time I was in Korea.
I plan to quit smoking altogether after this Colorado trip, save for at events like DCGCON or GOTJ.

@psyral-infection thanks for the advice! Teaching English is something I’ve dreamed about doing ever since I first got a taste of living in another culture for a long period of time. I have actually been considering the Peace Corps as well.

@piggofdoom Hell yea! Basically the last time I was active on the forum and not just lurking (a couple years ago), I remember talking to you about this. So stoked for you man. I was living in Japan last time I talked to you, now I’m back state-side, living outside of Portland, OR. I’m moving back to Japan at the end of this year too! If you have any questions, or need any suggestions re: companies, or the application process, or anything in general, feel free to holler at me man.
