@tylenol mentioned in another topic that they like the fact that ICP usually do full albums. Meaning you’re suppose to start listening on the intro and listen all the way through. Each song represents a piece of one story or narrative that the album collectively tells. Pink Floyd albums basically. Twiztid aren’t a stranger to the concept either and I’ve always thought that the best way to listen to Tales From the Lotus Pod was like that. Emotionally and pacing wise, it’s brilliant as one solid piece of art. Much better than just as some unrelated songs.

Artists doing their albums that was is so infrequent at this point that I thought it deserved its own thread.

I know that GWAR, Lo Key (mostly), Behemoth, and Finntroll do it. GrewSum’s Inner Sanctum is like that, Figure’s Gravity is, Jill Tracy has a few albums that are, and Slipknot’s .5: The Gray Chapter is suppose to be.

What artists do you know that do their music like this? Or at least some albums that work as a full length story or narrative.

Since you tagged me (thanks!) I will add two (perhaps) unconventional choices I love:

Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia by the Dandy Warhols and American Beauty from the Dead.

Fear Factory “Obsolete” … it’s a concept about machines taking over humanity, or something.

Masta Ace “A Long, Hot Summer”… whole album is a story about dude’s brother who stole his song idea and more stuff happens.

MF Doom “Mm..Food”…. just listen to it, front to back.

Kool Keith aka Dr. Octagon, Dr. Dooom, etc etc etc…. lots of his albums are concept albums.

Q Strange_Creation to exeqution the Autobiography of a serial killer is one of the best horrorcore concept albums IMO.

other good ones are: The J Hexx project_ the possession of Annabelle lee, and Bloodshot_Bloodshot Inn

Insane Poetry’s Grim Reality was a concept album like that.

I think United States of Horror will basically end up being that, if not intentionally than just thematically.

How the hell is American Beauty a concept record? I mean, it has an amazingly cohesive sound but there is no concept, no narrative. If the Dead ever had a true concept record it was Workingman’s Dead.

Fleetwood Mac – Rumors

David Bowie – Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars

The Cure – Disintegration

Dr. Octagon – Dr. Octagonacolyist

Kool Keith – Sex Style

Dr. Dooom – First Come, First Served

The Frogs – It’s Only Right and Natural

DJ P Forreal and Prince Paul – Negros on Ice

Prince Paul – A Prince Among Theives

Gravediggaz – 6 Feet Deep

Rza – Bobby Digital in Stereo

The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonley Heart Club Band

There are so many. I could do this all night.

Esham – DMT Sessions, to hear the creator of Acid Rap do a project around the different feeling of 20 drugs was incredible back when that dropped..

most albums have a general concept and theme that you can box it into.. actual storytelling-concept projects like “Wizard Of The Hood” are much more rarer..

Before rap took over my playlist I listened to Marilyn Manson’s Antichrist Superstar until it sounded like elevator music. It’s the first in a triptych of concept albums, with Mechanical Animals and Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death).

Related question: which ICP album functions as the most well-executed full-concept experience for you all? For me it is probably Milenko, Wraith: Shangri-La or BPB.

I’ve been sleepin on that dude for too long. Me thinks this is the tipping point and I’m going to have to suck it up and buy some shit.

It’s hard to distinguish between just favorite ICP albums and ones that best execute full concept. Shangri-La was well delivered for what they were going for. I think Ringmaster was too. The concept (the mouthpiece of the Carnival) is simple enough but they manage to give “him” a consistent voice throughout the entire album and at no point does it sound forced or unnecessary. From start to finish it sounds like his words being uttered. A large part of the credit for that goes to Mike E. but I digress. Oh yeah, Bizzaar works well too. It doesn’t fit a particular narrative necessarily but the concept of sporadic lunacy that they were going for lands very, very well.

The Great Milenko, hands down. The unedited Halls of Illusions video still gives me chills.

The Residents have some of my favorite concept albums. Two that come to mind are God in Three Persons and Tweedles. God in Three Persons is about a man that meets Siamese twins with the power to heal. He convinces them to take their power of healing on tour and becomes their manager. I don’t want to ruin what happens if someone decides to give it a listen so I won’t mention what happens. Definitely an interesting concept. Tweedles is from the point of view of a sex addict rationalizing his addiction that has afflicted his social life and personal relationships. Oh and he aspires to be an entertainer that paints his genitals as a clown named Tweedles. haha

ICP’s Terror Wheel and Tunnel of Love function as well executed concept albums for me. Oh and Wizard of The Hood.

I think Milenko works best for me, too. Just as a sonic experience, I always find something that carries me away. Played it tonight just thinking about it, and it was “House of Horrors.” Fun song, feels like being there, cracks me up and ends on a perfect creepy vibe. “Pass Me By” is maybe my favorite closer. At least right now.

so, i did the breakdown in my head, which im not gonna bother typin out, but in so doing, i realized that ‘well-executed full-concept’ dont even apply at all until hells pit.  for various reasons.

the most well-executed full-concept experience…?

think ima crib from noahs paper, and say death pop.

if not that, wizard of the hood is about the only other qualifier.  depends on how tight you wanna be with the definition of ‘well-executed’.
