(I found this story, it’s a little over a year old. Sorry if this is a repost, I just don’t ever remember seeing it and I thought it was mildly interesting)
Insane Clown Posse’s Violent J makes false claim Hot Topic stores ban group’s merchandise
By Eric Lacy
DETROIT, MI – Either Insane Clown Posse member Violent J has been caught in a lie on tape, he misspoke, or there’s some kind of confusion between his marketing team and national retail outlet Hot Topic.
Violent J claimed in a video posted online last week that Hot Topic no longer sells the group’s merchandise because of the FBI’s designation last fall of the ICP’s fans, known as juggalos, as gang members.
“When (the FBI) made that list, stores like Hot Topic and (expletive), a lot of them stopped carrying our (expletive),” said Violent J in a video posted last week on a website called Noisey. “They were like: ‘We aren’t carrying gang apparel.'”
Those claims appear dead wrong, based on this reporter’s trip Saturday to a Hot Topic store at Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills.
Not only can Insane Clown Posse fans buy merchandise at the mall’s Hot Topic, including shirts and the latest album “The Mighty Death Pop,” but they can also walk 50 feet across the mall’s walkway to Spencer’s and find an even wider selection.
“This seems kind of silly and irrelevant,” said Hot Topic store manager Danielle Virjan of Violent J’s claim, related to ICP’s claim its suing the FBI. “They’re trying to push a case, and I don’t know what that has to do with the merchandise at our stores.”

Virjan said she hasn’t received any kind of chain-wide edict from the California-based Hot Topic headquarters to pull ICP merchandise from the store and doesn’t anticipate one in the future.
Attempts to reach Violent J, whose real name is Joseph Bruce, were unsuccessful.
And ICP’s publicist Andy Pellegrini hasn’t returned Mlive Detroit’s calls or e-mail messages for more than a week.
Virjan showed this reporter Saturday afternoon that 18 ICP albums for $13.99 apiece and three t-shirts at $20.50 were available for sale at that Hot Topic location.
The store sold out of $2.99 rubber wristbands about a week ago, after it went through about 20 in a three-week span.
That pace of sales, however, is slow compared to several years ago when Hot Topic stocked much more ICP merchandise, Virjan said.
“Their stuff hasn’t been as popular as it used to be; we haven’t seen that much of a demand,” Virjan said. “We used to have a whole row of the t-shirt wall for them, they’re hats have clearanced out. (The merchandise) just hasn’t been as big as it used to be.”
If Violent J misspoke in the video posted online, and meant to say that another national retail outlet has banned ICP merchandise, then it’s hard for this reporter to determine which one he could’ve meant.
The place even has shot glasses ($14.99 for a set of four), things called “pimp cups” ($19.99) and – just in time for back to school – backpacks ($59.99).
Spencer’s employee Autumn Dodson, 21, from Lake Orion, is also surprised to hear Violent J’s claim Hot Topic and “a lot” of other stores have banned their merchandise.
Dodson has found some of the ICP merchandise popular enough among the fan base to steal, especially at the Oakland Mall store in Troy.
During the year Dodson has split time between Great Lakes Crossing and Oakland Mall, she’s recalled catching at lest three young thieves with ICP goods.
“They always have been nice and willing to give things back,” said Dodson, of kids that seemed to be within the 13-17 age range. “And most of them got really scared when they were caught.”
During one instance at the Oakland Mall, Dodson recalls a 15-year-old ICP fan who got caught stealing and detained at the mall for at least half an hour – until his mom came to pick him up.
Based on Dodson’s experiences with ICP fans, she clearly doesn’t buy the notion they’re part of a widespread gang.
“I think it’s just a bunch of goofballs trying to be tougher than they really are,” she said.
Mlive Detroit will keep making an effort to reach Violent J and his pal Shaggy 2 Dope to get ICP’s side of the story.

I saw this when it was OP’d. And the first thing that still comes to mind is “You used a base group of 1 or 2 in your local area as your proof”. They also used stores in Michigan, their home state. Which as far as I know is a state that does not consider Juggalos a gang. Where as the Hot Topics in my Area stopped selling their merchandise because here they are indeed considered a gang.

The Tacoma Mall shooting was an attempted mass murder that occurred on November 20, 2005, at the Tacoma Mall in Tacoma, Washington, United States. The gunman, Dominick Maldonado, entered the mall with a semi-automatic Norinco MAK-90 rifle and a pistol, injuring six before he instigated four armed kidnappings.
Details
During the course of the shooting, Brendan (Dan) McKown, a legally armed citizen, intervened. McKown drew his 9mm CZ pistol and verbally commanded Maldonado to put down his gun. Maldonado’s response was to fire on McKown, striking him once in the leg and four times in the torso, damaging McKown’s spine and leaving him paralyzed. In addition to McKown, five other people were shot but not seriously injured, and a seventh person received a non-gunshot injury. At least one other person in the mall at the time also pulled a gun on Maldonado, but did not fire for fear of hitting innocent bystanders.[1]
Maldonado then took four people hostage in a Sam Goody store, including two employees, a customer, and a 12-year-old boy whom he only briefly held captive before releasing. The attack began shortly after noon, and the hostage situation lasted until four p.m. when Maldonado surrendered to a Tacoma police SWAT team without further incident.[2]
Hostages taken during the incident chronicle their story on Biography Channel‘s I Survived….
The shooter
The perpetrator in the shootings was 20-year-old Dominick Sergio Maldonado, who had an extensive juvenile criminal record including burglary, theft, and possession of burglary tools. He had also been given a court order not to possess any weapons. At the time of the shooting, Maldonado had recently separated from his girlfriend, and had been using methamphetamine without sleep for almost a week.[3]
Trial and imprisonment
Maldonado was charged with eight counts of first-degree assault, four counts of first-degree kidnapping, and two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm. Maldonado pleaded not guilty to the charges and has since been through five different lawyers and three defense teams.[4][5]
Maldonado was convicted on October 2, 2007,[6] and sentenced to 163 years in prison on November 2.[7][8][9] He unsuccessfully attempted to escape from the Clallam Bay Corrections Center on June 29, 2011.[10] During the escape attempt, 25-year-old Dominick Maldonado took a corrections officer hostage using a pair of scissors. Kevin Newland, a second inmate, was shot and killed by a guard after driving a forklift through a set of doors and crashing it into a perimeter fence. [11]
