Blowfly Interview (6/5/15)

Born Clarence Reid in 1939, Blowfly is the first original dirty rapper. He’s  been creating music for over 50 years and still tours to this day.  He is considered to be the Godfather of Hip-Hop and is also the inventor of the soul sound found within Miami, Florida. Many artists have sampled his work over the years, including Atmosphere, Beyonce, and the almighty, Wu-Tang Clan. As a matter of fact, the scratched sample from Eazy-E’s “Nobody Move” is Blowfly’s “Rapp Dirty” found within the lyric”What I thought was a bitch was nothing but a man”. Rapp Dirty is indeed the first rap song created, as it was first released in Europe in 1965. The single appeared again on the 1976 album “Butterfly”. It was then  re-released in 1980 due to to the popularity of Sugar Hill Gang’s 1979 single “Rappers Delight”.

Chad Thomas Carsten: Define Funk

Blowfly: The smell that came out of your mama’s pussy when your daddy shot his nuts off and made you.

CTC: What were the first records you listened to as a child and what record was your all time favorite to groove out to?

BF: First records I liked were the hillbilly records. The Blues was depressing, but the hillbillies had Tex Williams. He was known for “Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (That Cigarette)”.  That was my favorite song and he rapped it all the way back in the 1940’s!

CTC: Give us a brief background behind the first dirty lyrics you wrote

BF: When I was 7 years old, I had to leave school and work the farm, because my daddy died in World War II. I would write dirty songs as my revenge on the blacks who made a kid work instead of them. But it backfired because the white folks loved it. First one I did was Earnest Tubb’s “Walkin The Floor Over You” and I changed it to “I’m Jerkin’ My Dick Over You” .

CTC: How did you and KC & The Sunshine band first cross paths?

BF: If the price is right, I’ll put my real name on anything.  KC was a little gay kid who hung around the studio and got his ass kicked all the time. I told those motherfuckers that they better watch out because they are gonna wind up working for him. And they sure as fuck did! KC went to my wedding and he heard my father in-law’s Sunshine Junkanoo band.  That’s where he got the name Sunshine Band from. I wrote his first single “Sound Your Funky Horn”.

CTC: Why did you pursue rapping dirty over R&B singles?

BF: Rapping dirty and fucking with other people’s songs is just more fun. I made a lot of people rich, so I got freaky.

CTC: How was the overall crowd reaction performing under Blowfly live for the first time?

BF: I did two shows in Detroit back in the early 1970’s. I wasn’t that dirty in the first set. An old white lady came backstage and told me to get as nasty as I could, because that’s what people paid for.  So, I came out and said “Good evening motherfuckers, meat beaters and rump eaters!”  They went nuts!

CTC: Let’s introduce who is currently in your back up band and their favorite Blowfly songs to play live

BF: My bassist is Shaun on the Lawn. He likes to fuck bitches on the lawn. He always wants to play “Spermy Night in Georgia”, because he wants to shoot his load off in a chick at the first possible patch of ass grass.  My guitarist is Billy The Kid. He likes to play “Eat It”, because he plays the solo with his tongue and shows all the chicks that he’s hung. My drummer is Uncle Tom. He always wants to play different shit because he’s married and has to fuck the same pussy every night.

CTC: The wildest touring moment for you guys?

BF: We were in San Diego and we had these girls onstage dancing. I looked behind me and there was a five girl orgy onstage! My guitarists were playing between their legs and probably got them all pregnant. Those are gonna be some real freaks when they hit 21.

CTC You’ve been widely sampled within the Hip-Hop genre. Your overall feelings on that?  And which artist do you feel rocks your style the best?!

BF: Sampling is rape! They just took my shit and rapped over it. When I got paid for it, like from Jurassic 5 and Ice Cube, at least I was broken off some. But lots of motherfuckers didn’t pay shit. ODB of the Wu-Tang Clan did send me some money, even when he didn’t have to and I appreciate that. RIP. As far as rappers who took my nasty style, Too $hort does it well!  He hooked me up last winter and helped pay my taxes. He’s real and showed his love.

(The first and only time Blowfly and Dolemite recorded together. The collaboration happened to be set up by  Reel Life Productions alumni, Daniel Jordan. It also turned out to be Dolemite’s final recording.)

CTC: When is the next Blowfly release dropping? Any details behind the name of the new album?

BF: We’re recording part of the new album in Texas on my next tour. It’s gonna come out next year, which happens to be the 45th anniversary of the “Weird World of Blowfly” LP. One song is gonna be “The Big Gay Crack”, instead of the “Big Payback”, by James Brown. It don’t have a name yet, but feel free to go on my twitter @BlowflyOfficial and tell me what you think I should call it.

CTC: For the final question, any sex advice you’d like to offer to the fans?

BF: Eat the pussy. Pay for dinner. And if they break your heart, fuck their friends.
