Pyro - "Time to Kill" Pyro - "911" Pyro - "Ridin High" Pyro - "The Call Me Crazy"

Hello Juggalos, Juggalettes and everyone out there in Faygoluvers Land!  It’s Johnny O and I’m back once again to bring you the freshest artists in the underground. That’s right, it’s time once again for the Underground Spotlight. Now, before we jump into anything I have to get some shit out of the way first. I may be a little late on this, but I wanted wish everyone a HAPPY HOLIDAYS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR. So, Scottie D, BeZerk, Paul_NForm and the entire Faygoluvers family I hope 2014 is treating you right. Of course, I hope the New Year has kicked off right for all of our readers as well.

Okay, now that all of the pleasantries have been exchanged I’d say we can get this damn thing started, how about you? That’s what I thought. Now, up next we have Pyro an underground artist who began in Oklahoma before making the transition to California. Since the move things have picked, but Pyro remains on hard at work. His latest effort, the Collaboration Concept album Dr. Killabo, is looking to make some big noise upon its’ release. Whether he’s opening for the likes of AMB or changing shit up with some West Coast stoner (You know I love that) tracks, Pyro continues the grind.

I suppose enough is enough and I’m sure you came for the interview, so let’s just get to it.

JO: So, first for the fans who haven’t heard of Pyro before can you tell us a little about yourself?

Pyro: Well I’ve been writing lyrics and singing for several years in fact I don’t remember a time when this wasn’t what I wanted to do. My earliest memories of it go as far back as the 3rd grade when we had an assignment where we had to draw a picture of what we wanted to do when we grew up and I drew myself on a stage holding a mic. By the time I was in middle school I started writing lyrics and was singing heavy metal music. I went through several bands never able to find other members as serious about making music as I was, which is why I really fell in love with performing horrorcore music, it was the best of both worlds. I could express my music the way I wanted to and I only had to rely on myself to get it done.

JO: How would you describe your style?

Pyro: You know I hear a lot of artists cringe about being labeled horrorcore but that’s what I am and I’m proud of it. It seems somebody is always there to push your buttons and for me that’s the fuel I use to make some of the most violent tracks I can.

JO: I know you began your career in Oklahoma, but eventually found your way to California.  Can you explain the effect this had on your music if any?

Pyro: The move to California helped a lot.  It put me closer to the areas and people that have given more opportunities than I had in Oklahoma.

JO: How would you describe the underground scene in California versus Oklahoma?

Pyro: You know, they’re both real strong but the chance to get in front of big crowds and get the exposure you need to further your career just aren’t there in Oklahoma. Here 90% of the shows you play are opening for nationally known acts. The crowds are larger so you get your music out to many more fans.  I just recently performed my first show with NCJ (Nor-Cal Juggalos) opening for AMB and the love was just amazing.

JO: Just to step off subject for a moment. Whenever I meet or talk to someone else who loves weed I have to ask, what’s your favorite strain?

Pyro: I think some of the best i had was some cotton candy from this little club in downtown Los Angeles. When I popped the top and my whole vehicle smelled like a carnival.

JO: In 2012 you actually decided to form your own label, Sickazfuk Records.  What has it been like under your own label?

Pyro: The reason for the creation of Sikazfuk Records was the fact that there are so many underground record companies that promise artists this and that and never deliver. They just get so wrapped up in politics.  When good opportunities arise they go to the artists that are buddy buddy with the C.E.O. So I separated myself from all the crap and figured I could handle my career better on my own and I did just that. The next gig I landed I did on my own which was the main venue I’ve wanted to play since I was sixteen. That was the Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood when I opened for Big B in December of 2012. I do work a lot and rep SpookHouse ent. out of Sacramento but everything I release is under my own label

JO: Currently you’re hard at work on a collaboration project schedule for 2014 called Dr. Killabo. Can you let us in on any of the details yet?

Pyro: This is the big one for me. By the time it’s released it will have been 3 years since my last release. The idea came to me while driving around one day. I had wanted to do a collab album but not the same old thing everyone else has done. I wanted it to be unique and I wanted it to signify a rebirth of my career.  This is the biggest most in depth project I’ve ever taken on. First of all there will be a Saw/Frankenstein story line where I play this mad scientist/doctor named Dr. Killabo.  I’ve drugged and kidnapped some of the biggest names in the underground and have them individually locked up in different cells in this dungeon area. Then, one by one, my henchman will fetch an artist and bring them to the operating room where I will remove their brain in an attempt at stealing their talent and creating a masterpiece. So, after an artist is brought in and the door slams the track with that artist will begin. Another thing fans will notice is the way I write now is totally different from before. I decided to take a step back and change my entire schemes and the result has been amazing. I can’t get much into names right now, I will say there are four of which that were on the Tunnelrunners EP , four more that are still on that same level and 2 that I am working on come from 2 of the largest Juggalo related record companies out there. My verses I’ve been recording at my studio here in my house but for the final production I’m hiring Cris Paxton of Nexus Audio and drummer for Kung Fu Vampire to give it that extra flavor.

JO: Are there any other projects in the works for Pyro that you can tell us about?

Pyro: I am working on putting together a national tour hopefully for 2014.  There have been talks with other well known artists to put together a tour. Also for those who don’t know, for my 4/20 side, I recently started a side project called Westcoast Caliboyz with my partner X-tract and we released our first single entitled “Californ I A” which was also produced by Chris Paxton and can be found in the fresh tracks section of Faygoluvers

JO: If you could reach out to any artist(s) for collaboration, who would you love to work with?

Pyro: My biggest collab goals would be Tech N9ne and Twiztid for sure.

JO: What are you currently listening to?

Pyro: A lot of Tech lately, but I listen to wide variety between rap, hip-hop and metal.

JO: Who would you say have been your biggest inspirations throughout the years?

Pyro: Wow I find influence in almost everything I listen to but one of my earliest and largest was Motley Crue.

twitter.com/twisted_pyro

JO: Now before we go, how about a few shout outs?

Pyro: Everyone that’s had my back through the years Juggalos and Juggalettes alike, my wife Diana and my children, tha  Dreammasta and NineClouds NinjaLoc for welcoming me to the Cali family and showing me mads amount of luv. Mars, Kung Fu Vampire and Claas for all the respect they’ve show me and all the help they’ve given me time and time again.

All right, I think that will do it for this edition of the Underground Spotlight. I want to thank Pyro for taking time out for this interview and thank all the fans for checking us out each week. It’s my absolute fucking pleasure to bring these interviews to you and look for even more freshness in 2014.

As always, remember if you’re an artist and would like to be featured right here on the Faygoluvers’ Underground Spotlight just hit me up at [email protected]. Make sure to include a short bio, why you want to/should be featured, a pic or two and a couple tracks. Of course don’t forget to include UGS or something like that in the subject line. So, until next time fam.

Peace,

Johnny O
