Boo Clan

Sup Juggalos and Juggalettes and ghosts that go bump in the night. It’s the ghoul BeZerk himself to bring you a spooky segment from none other than Boo Clan. Coming out of where it’s warm right now, Florida, this duo has been hitting the underground hard and will soon be rockin’ a show with Kung Fu Vampire and Wolfpac.

I like YouTube a lot when it comes to music, so when I see an artist’s YouTube account with over 450,000 views and 12,000 channel views, and I compare it to my 5,200 views, I am impressed. Why do they have nine times the amount of views than me? Because they are fuckin good juggalos. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy this interview. Be careful of the things that go bump in the night.

Interview for: Boo Clan
Members: Boo Radley, Polta G
From: Florida

Faygoluvers: Why do you guys rap?

Boo: Rap has always been a form of art and expression for me. I grew up in a ton of very poor, very diverse neighborhoods, where I absorbed many, many different styles and genres of music. From rock to hip-hop, to dance, and disco. I truly love bits and pieces of all musical styles, with my top two of course being hip-hop and rock n’ roll. But, as the years passed, I found myself needing a new to express myself; a new technique to get my thoughts, opinions, stories, whatever- out of my head and into the world. Old school hip-hop had always been my main thing. Old CD’s from NWA, Snoop, Eazy E, etc. They were the shit. But then, a decade ago, I heard THEM . I heard ICP!! I heard the ‘Chicken Huntin Slaughterhouse mix’ on my homie’s computer. It was the first EVER ICP song I had heard, and it completelty ripped up my thought process, and began me down the path in which I continue to walk today. The mix or hip-hop and horror stories immediatley sent me running down that path. To me, the mixture is extraordinary and the people who knock it are just people who can’t understand it. After failed attempts at starting BOO CLAN in 2003 with my homie Dave, I rebooted the group with Grant and Tom in 2007, which finally lead us to this whole new 2010 and beyond era with just Grant and I, where our 3rd full length album- ANGEL CITY RIPPERS, has dropped all up in the interwebs. There are still directions we wanna take our sound and our group. There’s still MUCH more progress to be made. I don’t ever wanna stop progressing.

Polta-G: I’ve been around music my whole life. I was bound to fall into it in some way eventually. When I first heard rap, it dismantled my brain. That felt, to me, like the best way to convey a story or an issue through music. When I first got into ICP and Twiztid, I dunno that style got to me. I knew, though, that we could take it in an entirely new direction. Between Brandon and I, our brains can create some sick shit. He gave me the idea to restart his old rap group with another one of our friends, Tom (a.k.a Kasper). But Tom got too busy and decided to just help us with the work off the stage. With Angel City Rippers done (our newest album), I feel like we can take this dark rap scheme to a completly new sound level.

Faygoluvers: Where did you guys come up with your group name? Where did you come up with your stage names?

Polta-G: Brandon started this group in ’03, with another one of his friends named Dave (a.k.a Poe). After making a 4 track EP they ceased songmaking and just stopped doing it altogether. In ’07, he asked Tom and I if we wanted to restart it.

My stage name comes through much trial and error. I wanted to keep with the theme of apparitions, but it took a while to land on Polta-G, or Poltageis. I think, for a while I called myself Grim, which was just too fuckin typical to keep. In the end, Polta-G stuck with me most because of its uniqueness (If that’s a fuckin word).

Boo: Back in 2003 Boo Clan was born. Why we called it that, I don’t know. I wasn’t even known as Boo Radley it was simply DJ Boo way back then. I believe, if I remember correctly, we were calling it Boo Clan because the group was meant to have like six people in it, in which I would of been the leader. Nowadays, with the group having rebooted itself, we kept the title simply because it was cool, simple, catchy, and in the case of our backstory – relevant. It’s relevant because we are a clan of ghosts. Ghosts scare people. Ghosts go ‘Boo!’. Get it?

My Stage name originates partially from my own life and partially from ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’. Growing up, I was always called nicknames like ‘boo-bear’, ‘boo-boo’; stupid ass nicknames like that from mom and shit. I just shortened it later on. When the group was remade in 2007, it developed into Boo Radley, in a nod to the character from the book and movie. In a lot of ways I am like that character. We were both somewhat feared by neighborhood kids growing up. They thought I was a freak; a creep. Like him, I was ALWAYS misunderstood and unfairly labeled. And like him, in the rare cases that I would attempt to do some good, I would always have to disappear just as quick because I KNEW I would STILL be blamed for whatever it was. I AM Boo Radley. And he is me.

Faygoluvers: Who are some of your guys’ influences?

Boo: Honestly, with how weird my brain works- a huge influence on how my fuckin’ brain works has got to be Pee-Wee Herman. In a lot of ways he’s good and honest, but he’s also got a dark and fuckin’ crazy side. As far as music goes, Nine Inch Nails was a huge deal for me. Of course, the old school hip-hop scene- from Spice 1 to Eazy E and all that good shit in between. 90’s alternative rock was a big deal; loved that shit! Blaze Ya Dead Homie, TWIZTID, And of course, the most obvious. ICP!!!!! They started me down this path and for that I am eternally grateful.

Polta-G: I’d have to say I really respect John Stewart. Barack Obama too, cuz he’s got a lot to live up to and it’s a fuckin difficult job. As far as artists go, I would say definatly Tech N9ne. And, of course, ICP. They practically built the underground which we all claim home. I’d even say I really respect Eminem. Hate his music or not, ya still gotta respect the guy.

Faygoluvers: What are your favorite Faygo flavors?

Polta-G: Moon Mist, Strawberry Kiwi, and FUCKING CREME SODA.

Boo: Jazzin’ Blues Berry, Cola, and Root Beer.

Faygoluvers: Who has your group worked with in the past?

Boo: No one. We haven’t gotten to a comfortable point in our life as BC to collabo with anybody. We’re not ready as artists or as collaborators to start that. Right now we’re in a good place, though. I don’t think I really want to do that yet. In time, I think we’ll start doing it. Let’s see what happens.

Polta-G: So far we haven’t done any collabs because we’re workin on trying to find a good medium for our sound before handling anyone elses.

Faygoluvers: Who would you like to work with in the future?

Polta-G: If we had the opportunity, I would definatly be amped to do some collabs with Kung Fu Vampire. I think the 3 of us have such different sounds that it would mesh well. Also rappers like The Jokerr and Hopsin have really impressed me, lyrically. And I think it goes without saying working with Psychopathic would be the fuckin shit.

Boo: Well the most obvious fucking pinnacle goal is to work with ALL things psychopathic. But on the real, I would fuckin’ LOVE to work with Kung Fu Vampire, Jared of (hed)PE, Potluck. I’d love to sit down, smoke some weed, and bust out some tracks with them fools.

Faygoluvers: Who have you guys opened or headlined for?

Boo: Back in March we opened up for Project Born. In May we ‘headlined’ the hip-hop takeover in Orlando.

Faygoluvers: What makes your group unique from other groups or artists?

Polta-G: I think we bring a fuckin “jack-of-all-trades” kinda style to the table that other rappers don’t. I think sometimes when groups enter this type of rap, they tend to focus only on murdering someone in every song or shooting guns in every song. It gets typecasted. We often get typecasted by people who don’t usually listen to underground genres, but after hearing our shit, they get very intrigued. We’re kinda coming from all angles. Acid/Dark/Gothic/Rage/Metal Rap. It’s like a sandwich with EVERY deli meat. It’s just fuckin good.

Boo: What makes us different from a lot of other fuckin’ groups is the NEED to be different from the rest. Yes we wear facepaint, and yes some of our songs are considered horrorcore, but we actually have in depth group backstories that go with the make-up and go with the songs. We aren’t ‘riding the bandwagon’ like so many other groups are, and how so many other groups say WE ARE. Our styles can change to anything we want. Being in Boo Clan is being free. If Polta-G wanted to write a club banger, then we’d do it. If I wanted to write somethin’ stupid as hell like bananas taking over new york, and raping all of the mail boxes- then shit we’d do it! We can dive into whatever genre, sub-genre, micro-genre, nano-genre we want! Boo clan = musical FREEDOM! Our ectoplasm is always changing, moving, securing itself more and more in this world. You can’t put a genre onto us. You can call us horrocore just for the sake of our influences and the images we portray, but I don’t know if there is a set genre out there that

I would feel comfortable confining us to.

Faygoluvers: What do you guys have planned for the future? Any albums, solo albums, mixtapes, merch, or music videos in the making?

Boo: With us, there’s always something happening in the foreseeable future. We’ve got some content that’s going to drop throughou 2011. Right now we’re finishing up the Angel City Rippers arc that will end with the Dec.12 show in St. Pete. A couple albums and EPs or whatever. I don’t wanna say anything solid because things ALWAYS change. All I can say is- expect some Boo Clan shit in 2011- whatever the hell it may be.

Polta-G: We do have a few albums lined up. One will be a themed full-length LP, and the other will be a very experimental, very trippy 5-track EP. We’re having some new shirts on sale at our website www.radleyrecords.com. And we’re always cranking out new videos when we got the time so you can check those out on www.myspace.com/booclan666.

Faygoluvers: Shout outs?

Polta-G: All the people that show us love on Myspace and YouTube. You mother fuckers make it easy to love what I do. And an extra shout out to that kid that painted his face up like me and then posted it up on YouTube. That shit was pretty awesome.

Boo: All of our followers deserve a shout out. Without you, we do NOT exist. Also, to all the haters blowin’ up the spot with your video rants and hate videos- THANK YOU. You’re only fueling our underground popularity.
