Alrighty boils and ghouls, I'm gonna fess up to something kinda silly. For an art major, I'm incredibly ignorant about art. I mean, I get art and I can pretty much figure out whats going on in a piece, the techniques used to create a work, and the context surrounding it with just even a little bit of guidance.

But I've never taken art history (I'm taking an art history class now, but it just started) and I don't really like a lot of classical or modern art (basically anything that tries to be pretty) so I've never really investigated a lot of art scenes. Also, when it comes to aesthetics, I fail miserably. I sort of mentioned it recently in the Juggalo Show chat when I was like whatever about Tom Wood's art.

What I really suck at is just knowing artists. I know a few that are weird and off the wall because I was lucky enough to stumble upon their work or they were commercial artists who made comic books. So this is where you come in.

What visual art do you like? Did you ever stumble upon a work at a museum that just floored you? Do you hang out at a gallery that just speaks to you? Is there are street artist who just makes your brain happy?

Anything visual. Any medium or style. Just tell me what you like to look at and if you can why.

Cuz if it ain't post modern or weird or wild or sad, I don't normally even look twice at it.

Like when my art was on display in a local museum, we did this panel discussion and the panel was asked about what working artists we'd like to share studio space with and I was like "uh the Insane Clown Posse?" lol. And for my homework in my class this year I had to write about art I like and I wrote about home made Halloween costumes, rachels tarot deck, and gorey special effects shit. I'm pretty sure my teacher thinks I'm on drugs. And I wish I was cuz then I'd have an excuse.rasta_gif

Found this pricing about one of his earlier works that sold at auction:

Estimate $2,500 – $3,500
Starting Bid $1,250

Yikes.

The artist (Boadwee) teaches at the San Francisco Art Institute, so I guess South Park was right; San Francisco has disappeared "completely up its own asshole," ...

Post modernism is basically an entire movement of calling art shit so he made it literally shit. It's kinda hilarious. And then you get into process and materials and the uniqueness of how it's created. Basically the art world is a giant joke anymore with the punchline being that people will literally buy anything if the right people say it's good / the story is compelling.

Invisible art is basically the last thing Post modernism can do that is original and new and then we'll shift into a New mode of talking about art on a theoretical level. What seems to be happening though is we bounce back and forth in terms of modernism and post modernism. http://www.cbc.ca/radio/thisis.....-1.2847219

We have been stuck in this loop for a while. I'm much more interested in the Post modernist view because it is basically the punk rock of the art world.

This dude duchamp went to this gallery and he put a broken urinal he found in the trash and said it was his sculpture, it changed the way we think about art. Then when pop artist andy warhol hired people to make his art, it changed again.

Now art is literally all about the idea of a piece and how well you can sell the idea. So we circle between This Is Really Pretty and This Is New except the new stuff is never really that New.

One of warhols projects was urine based, for instance. He paid dudes to drink beer and piss on this metal because it changed color due to the acid in the urine.

The shit i don't know Jack about is the stuff that people actually like. Street art, impressionism, pop art outside of warhol, etc

The series "This Is Modern Art" might teach you exactly that:

list=PLHH5ZzcqYoHAMbs0VsMacoAxRt79GIwn9

This Is Modern Art YouTube playlist (all episodes available on YouTube)

I realize that you would prefer a personal dialogue in this thread, so please consider that my (and the YouTube fairy's) sharing this information with you FOR FREE is as personal as it gets:

"This Is Modern Art

1) I Am a Genius Focuses on the current state of modern art, and looks back at Picasso, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol to see how they changed the definition of art.

2) Shock Horror Revealing the ways modern art attempts to shock the audience.

3) Lovely Lovely Investigates on whether the once accepted view of art as merely a thing of beauty prevails today, examining the works of various artists.

4) Nothing Matters Focuses on minimalist art.

5) Hollow Laughter Examination on the jokes used in modern art.

6) The Shock of the Now Exploration of the authenticity of modern art and the media hype that often surrounds it, asking if it can be accused of repeating the art of the past."

What paintings of his do you like more? Do you know what you like about them more than persistence of memory?

My video teacher made me watch a film directed by Dali that was pretty nuts.

I went to the Dali museum and saw all his works. I did not like anything he did. I did not understand how he was even considered a mediocre artist. That was my take on it. But then again I find a lot of what is called art to be completely pointless and a waste of time, so what do I know.

What paintings of his do you like more?

not zillions, i suppose, but several.  a dozen, at least.

other than 'sleep', i cant remember any of the titles, offhand.  theyre usually bizarre and/or in a foreign language.

Do you know what you like about them more than persistence of memory?

sure.
