Re: Whitney Peyton's gathering announcement and slated track on Clay's new mixtape.

Ahem.

First, a true story:

I first met Ms. Peyton on Myspace. We were both femcess from the Philly area. She got my number, called me, and invited me to “her show.”

…Turns out it was an open mike. I laughed at that one.

So I signed up to do my own set. Why not?

When I got there, she acted so strange. “Oh who are you? OH one of my fans from the internet! Thank you for coming!” She seemed to use every chance she had to take a jab at a fellow artist and ego boost. Rappers, right?

But it was like one of those bizaar world scenarios. If you want to be a star, act like you already are one. And that's the game the girl was playing. It was weird. Especially in the world of hip hop.

It became clear we were from two different worlds.

At the time, I was working with old school producer DJ Pham–hip hop originator from NYC in the 80s. We were friends just kicking it in our neighborhood in northeast Philly, making tracks. Doing our thing. I was busy working, going to school, dealing with a foreclosure and helping a sick family member. My music was my outlet. JUST for fun.

And here was this young lady straight off the preteen model circuit, plugging away at MySpace with what must have been tons of free time. Whitney came from a rich family, had an agent from a very young age, and somewhere in the background, some stage mom or stage dad in the wings paying her ticket to fame. And now she's going by the name “underdog.” (With a talent scout and SOMEbody paying for those prepubescent glamour shots, holding up the American flag.) And I respect her as a fellow female artist. Her music has gotten a LOT better. But…Is she really the voice we need in the juggalo world?

Because, to me, Psychopathic Records is the epitome of self-made success. Anybody with a stage mom or child-acting career really has no place in the mix. Hopsin included.

Real recognize real.

Look: If you were on the Disney channel or making movie cameos as a child star, you need to take that to MTV and your Grammy Award shows. And the Philly Mayor's anti-littering campaign or whatever. Not that you even live in the city or know anything about that. Which is fine.

It's very important to me that we move women into the spotlight in the juggalo/underground scene. Absolutely. But it's gotta come from the right place.

All I'm saying is…Where is Molly Gruesome? Kid's got heart and no talent scout. That's my challenge to Psychopathic and all y'all.

Thanks for reading. kiss

Her wiki says shes a Grammy award winning artist cuz of her anti bullying song….would that make her the first Grammy winning artist at the gathering???

regarding whitney…  'teen model turned rapper' is almost exactly what i thought, whenever it was that i checked her shit.  other than that, not memorable enough to bother with.

U know why this chick sucks. Because she is a white girl trying to rap. She is garbage. For the record show me one white girl emcee who has a decent voice and can flow. None. I’m so tired everyone sclaiming to be a rapper. Go say some words over a beat and wow ur a rapper. This is the reason rap music is at the point it is. Wack people trying to make music. Everyone is not made for music. We need fast food workers, city employees, and other low paying low skill jobs for people

Never heard of this girl before. To answer chops question, I'd say Zigg Zagg.

When you sign to Psychopathic you become an actor/actress anyway. What's it matter if you already have a background doing it? They're all gimmicks on records and on stage. Plus 2pac went to art school and was a teen actor. Still one of the dopest rappers ever. Makes no different to me. She acts above her fans? Oh noes I'm sure she'll be out of place next to J who's made songs bragging about beating up his fans lol.

I listened to a couple of her songs. She sounds a little rough but she isn't bad. If she messes with Psychopathic more the quality will improve for sure.

How does Whitney appeal to Juggalos? The same way as T.O.N.E-z. Some Juggalo discovered their music and it spread through out the Juggalo fanbase.

A white female rapper who sounds good? Gavlyn.

No one asked you too either.

Nobody would care about ICP either without the makeup. Or anyone on Psychopathic without their gimmicks. Matter of fact, shock&awe, image plays a big role in the entertainment business. But shh don't tell anybody that'll be our little secret. Not a fan of hers and haven't heard about her until the Clay announcement but come on.

Not a fan, i find her voice nasally and whiny, and her lyrics are horrorcore light. You cant tell me you are a teen model, come from a wealthy family and then switch and be like “i'm tough” and “i came from the streets” and talking about being mentally unbalanced, all musicians are a gimmick, but when it reeks of desperation like hers does its very off putting. Also i get the vibe from her that she really does think shes hot shit when in reality shes just above bottom of the rung in the industry success wise

it looks to me like youre being adversarial for the hell of it.

which is fine, even though 'no one asked you too [sic]'.  freedom of speech and all that.

If possible, I'd like to move the conversation away from a larger discussion about race and gender in the world of rhyme (because I DO believe there are a large number of deserving female artists out there and that even Peyton deserves respect, like anyone and EVERY one). Every time a woman gets on a mic, she is instantly compared to another woman, which is unfair and a perception that needs adjusting, IMO. That would be like comparing, say, Josh from Potluck to other Jewish rappers (Necro, Ill Bill, come to mind). It happens all the time with female artists, and it wasn't my intention to invoke a conversation like that.

Aside from the politics of race and gender, I just feel that it's really an issue of “class” and “The Message,” to bring it back to the roots of hip hop (Melle Mel and Funkmaster Flex).

Is a teen model turned rapper really worthy of the spotlight in THIS scene? I'm not too sure. I personally feel that in order for Psychopathic to maintain its beneath-the-streets credibility and edge, Peyton might need to be moved aside. It's not that she needs to be completely cut from the equation. Is she second stage material? Certainly. It's just that she doesn't represent the juggalo world. Her world is plastic pop, and she'll admit this.

Look at Clay. He's in Southwest Detroit, doing his thing and holding it down for his people. Could she even survive one day in that struggle? Or know what that involves? Who am I to judge? I don't know.

But I'm just reminded of that passage from Behind The Paint, where J talks about bringing girls from the suburbs to the Southwest after shows. “This is where you LIVE?” If we bring that to the main stage and spotlight, we'll just be feeding another ego–not enhancing the role of women in underground hip hop. There needs to be a better representation of the ladies in the spotlight. No teen models turned emcees.

Molly Gruesome might not have an army of Twitter followers stalking juggalogathering.com, demanding her performance. But what she does have is heart. And that's just my two cents. Again, it's not a competition between female artists. It's about being genuine to the scene, the people, and the roots. The message.

You know…You're right on that scruff. It comes down to the music and what interests folks (or doesn't).

I guess I just have a good deal invested in it as a feminist, femcee, juggalo, music lover, and Philly girl. I just feel this is a step in the wrong direction, even if the goal is to add more female voices to Psy, which is a GREAT move. Kudos on that. The Madrox-misogyny era gotta go. But this chick just ain't doing it for me, na mean? Others feel the same, I'm sure. Gotta be another way.
