I figured I'd dig up this thread to talk about "The Lost Tapes." I got it and spun it a few times, so here are a few bullet points:

Went into it with the mentality that it would sound like a lackluster Ape-X. It's pretty on point with Ape-X through most of it.

Of the 12 tracks, only one has a feature on it.

The majority of it sounds like Prozak rapping along side the child of Rittz and The Tasmanian Devil. Which I dig.

You get to hear a ClockworC solo track. I had wondered if he could carry a song by himself because of his rapping style. but it turns out that he can also sing. So yes.

I liked 10/12 of the tracks. Unfortunately the 2 I didn't care for are the first 2.

Top 3 tracks: "Fuck Shit Up," "Lie," and "Concrete Sea."

Bottom 3 tracks: "Cold Cold World" (very empty beat), "Hella White Tiger," and "Now and Forever ft. Rebecca Leon"

Now to explain further, "Hella White Tiger" is a good track, it's just that the intro of the instrumental gives me the urge to skip it. "Now and Forever" is also a good track, but the hook sounds like someone paused the GV track and played a random song every minute or so. Doesn't mesh with the verses at all. And "Cold Cold World..." yeah, just didn't like it.

By thew way, here's Clock's solo track. I was impressed:

I spun the album a few more times and ot got a bit better, but is still very forgettable. I found myself enjoying the verses from G-Mo and Monoxide more than the rest of the album. Still pumped to see these guys live though and my GV shirt is fresh lol, but they're gonna have to change up the repetitive flows/sound.

I'm sure after the good response this has received, its duly noted within the GV and MNE camps and they'll drop a bomb for the sophomore album.

It's a fuck up on MNE's part. They aren't perfect either. From everything I've seen the album has been in demand and is getting great reviews. Really though 2 preorder packages is shitty compared to everyone else who dropped a album with mulitple different bundles.

Well, after my first listen through the album I have to regrettably say I'm not feeling it. With the exception of the two tracks they released early on (GV & Grime) every song sounds the same. Maybe it'll grow on me after a few spins and I'm still looking forward to their live show, but right now, meh...

My problem with MNE artists isn't a lack of gimmicks or anything so much as they all kind of have the same style. It's the CES CRU/MadChild random bars that could easily be switched out and put into different songs without anyone knowing style rap. It just doesn't work for me.

Yup. I think it might have been Mr. Bones that said it but "my daddy was a pistol, I'm a son of a gun" has absolutely been used by him before. Glad I wasn't the only one that caught it.

Gave this album a listen today. These guys aren't as terrible as everyone else on MNE. So that's something, I guess. There's nothing there to really hold my attention though. It's just more sporadic "I'm so this that I'm that" rap with a touch of numetal/modern punk flare to make it seem a little different. One dude's got bars for sure, one dude just makes me want to listen to Grewsum and...that's about it. Which is a bummer. I want to like SOMEONE from MNE, dammit. I liked hearing KFV on it. That dude needs to be bigger.

lmao see that's my thing too...I like that they aren't trying to go with characters for every artist like Psychopathic mainly tries to do but the problem with that is what they ARE doing isn't as interesting IMO...Lex can rap but his album was boring as far as concepts go...G-Mo can rap but it wasn't really anything I haven't heard someone else do better...I was excited for a Zodiac project finally but that shit kinda disappointed me too aside from a few tracks (hopefully the full album is better)...wasn't into the Gorilla Voltage album...liked Continuous enough to buy the vinyl but it really was continuous of what they've been doing aside from a few joints where they switched it up a bit

to be fair they're still a new label and still developing their sound which is obvious...they're getting better with it I think but I'm not fucking with YW at all...not just because of the shady stories about him but I don't really like his music...actually preferred when he was singing on shit because his own shit was kinda bland aside from having a pretty good flow (lyrically I've always thought him and Bonez were both kinda lame...that song on the EP with MNE where he's crying about that girl and talking about kidnapping her new boyfriend and torturing him lmao...fuck kinda Blahzay Roze shit is that?)

Mai waifu got me into these dudes when they were Damn Dirty Apez, and I've heard Mr. Grey feature all over other underground artist's shit for years now. I didn't even realize he was the dude from Apez until they made the name switch.

I wasn't disappointed by the album. There's something explosively kinetic in their sound and they manage it while keeping impeccable rythm. Not an easy task to pull off by any means, but GV does it. It's not my first choice for something to bump (because it's not morbid crap), but I wouldn't mind if someone threw this on in the whip or at a party.

It's obvious MNE is building a roster to compete with the other major indies in terms of respectability. By sound and substance alone it seems like a collaboration with Strange is inevitable with these guys, which would be a win for fans of well constructed, dynamic music. The addition of Slaine on this album, R.A.'s verse on the The R.O.C.'s shit and G-Mo's connection to Vinnie Paz not only makes me excited for the new music, but gives our side of the underground a bit more credibility in the broader spectrum of underground hiphop. A stronger than average debut, I'd say. I expect nothing but good things from these guys.
