Watching "Rapture-Palooza" on Netflix. A comedy, but with horror elements. They have shit talking crows and wraiths that smoke herb, so juggalos may take interest.

In a rare moment for me, I've just watched the entire "Bag of Bones" TV miniseries on Netflix. I rarely have time to watch films, and when I do get the time I have beer + music, so it was interesting.

I'd never read the Stephen King book, but the movie was dripping with SK themes and literary devices... the small town setting, with small town secrets, small town weirdos and such.

The book is supposed to be one of his best, so maybe now I'll give it a whirl. But the film was good. Very good for stretches. Minimal hokiness is key for King adaptations, and this one only had a few goofy spots. A nice modern ghost story. Not scary much, but I don't expect to be frightened by movies anymore. A good story with competent acting, a sightful setting, not too farfetched... worth a chill one time viewing.

FYI the trailer for Leprechaun: Origins came out but it's crap. Doesn't show anything but screaming and grass fields...

Also, didn't see it mentioned in the thread and it's not "new" but I *LOVE* "Hobo With A Shotgun"!!!

It's made to look like (and does so amazingly well) it came outta 1983 with all kinds of camera and color tricks, LOADED with crazy ultra-violence and some great quotes!

A Final Farewell to FEARnet

Image Enlarger

You may or may not know this, but as of July 30th, FEARNET will shut its doors forever. In April, Comcast NBCUniversal bought out FEARNET. Because NBCUniversal already has Chiller and Syfy, it was decided that FEARNET was redundant.  Most of the staff was laid off then, with a skeleton crew kept around to help with the transition.

I have worked at FEARNET for the last six years - the last two full-time as associate editor - and it has been the most formative experience of my life. It would drive my husband crazy because I would work non-stop - but when it was all said and done, he told me that he never heard me complain. Not once. I loved this job. I will continue writing about horror. Currently I am writing for Shock Till You Drop, and I have some stuff in the works for Fangoria. I am currently working on a book about Friday the 13th: The Series. It is my favorite television show of all time, and am getting brand new interviews with the cast and crew.

All of us at FEARNET did it because we loved it. We love horror, and we were given an amazing outlet to work in. Network president Peter Block is a gregarious man who always had time for a conversation about the newest horror flicks and what I was watching on TV this week (it was usually everything). Editor-in-chief Lawrence Raffel has ruined me for other job. As a boss, he never said "no" to an idea I pitched, and he was always there to help flesh out ideas. As a friend, he was always there with a sarcastic quip and an open ear. I believe that I will always remain good friends with our brilliant editorial staff, Rob Galluzzo, Greg Burkart, John Squires, Scott Weinberg and Chris Connors, and with our amazing video staff, Rhianne Paz Bergado, Kyle Van Vonderen, Ben Koppin, and Jaclyn Kabble.

I don't know why Chiller did not decide to bring in the FEARNET team. With the talents of both networks working as one, we could have made an enormous impact on the television landscape. No matter how many horror flicks dominate the box office, and no matter how high the ratings are on genre TV, no one ever wants to take a chance on the horror genre. I don't know that it will make any difference, but it certainly couldn't hurt to send an email to the good people at Chiller and let them know how much you enjoyed the FEARNET web experience.

Finally, a huge amount of thanks must go out to you, the readers. You were such a great audience to write for. You truly love horror as much as we do, and you showed it with kind, thoughtful, and insightful comments. We literally could not have done FEARNET without your clicks, your likes, your comments, and your shares.

Rob Zombie’s ’31′ Is a Crowd-Sourced Film; First Details!

Rob ZombieImage Enlarger

Musician-turned-director Rob Zombie has official announced his Halloween-themed horror 31, which turns out to be a crowd-sourced effort.

The film revolves around five people kidnapped in the days leading up to Halloween.

As with all crowd-sourced projects, there are different tiers that land backers different rewards, such as an autographed movie poster, autographed DVD, thanks in the credits, lifetime access to every Rob Zombie show, and more.

Welcome to my next film. It is called ’31,’ ” states Zombie. “It is the story of five random people kidnapped on the five days leading up to Halloween and held hostage in a place called Murder World. While trapped inside this man-made Hell they must fight to survive playing the most violent game known to man… a game called 31.

Here’s why he chose the crowd-source:

“I’m crowd funding because I realize that it’s an incredible opportunity to engage the fans. They’ve always been the most important thing for me because, with metal and horror, the fans aren’t just fans – it’s their life, their lifestyle. They live and breathe it, as I do, and any way that you can bring the people that are as passionate about it as you are into the process is a win-win for everybody.Get on board! Get involved! Be part of this horrifying business! The world of horror needs you!”

It COULD be ok with the right team, but if it turns out anything like the new Oldboy (which I still refuse to watch) I will (duh) refuse to watch it.

Eli Roth’s “THE GREEN INFERNO” Release Scrapped; Future Unsure

Eli-Roth-The-Green-InfernoImage Enlarger

By now, horror fans are familiar with the release date shuffle that comes so naturally to the genre. While some films seem perpetually in flux or destined for a quiet VOD release, others are shelved at the last moment to take advantage of a more realized marketing push. However, in some rare cases a genre film hits that grey area between both reasons, baffling press, fans and executives alike.

According to Deadline, that might just be the case for Eli Roth’s first directorial effort in seven years, THE GREEN INFERNO. The hard-R cannibal flick, which was previously slated for a wide theatrical release on September 5th, has unexpectedly been pulled from Open Road’s release slate following financier Worldview Entertainment’s withdrawal of the film’s Publicity & Advertising budget. Deadline reports that behind-the-scenes talks are underway to determine the film’s future, whether it be a later theatrical release or possibly the limited release-plus-VOD plan which may be more viable.

From what can be seen, the shelving is not indicative of the film’s quality per se, but rather a matter of reassessing the costly deals made by Worldview ex-CEO Christopher Woodrow in the wake of his abrupt and unexplained departure from the company. In fact, THE GREEN INFERNO has received generally positive reviews for Roth, including from Fango’s Phil Brown.

Roth, who is currently on post-production on his next feature KNOCK KNOCK, has already taken to Twitter to address fans regarding the postponement. In fact, with the impending release of both the Roth-produced THE SACRAMENT and the Scream Factory Blu-ray of HEMLOCK GROVE, Open Road may be costing themselves free peripheral marketing. As of now, the fate of the film is unsure, but with a rating and pre-release buzz already secured, there’s little doubt that Open Road’s gory gamble will be available to horror fans sooner rather than later.

This is a cool thread but I'll be totally honest... I have a hard time getting into horror that isn't 197x or 198x.  I am a fan of the self-aware meta stuff that Wes Craven pioneered, like Scream, so I'm not impossible, but I am pretty weary of the current horror movie cliches like the dark filters and shaky cam stuff.  Interested to see hot RZ's 31 turns out.

I'm the neck cutta and I'm one block away...
