Jamie Madrox is back again with another Dark Horse Comics review. This time he takes on Ben Templesmith and Steve Niles’ “Criminal Macabre”.

Jamie Madrox’s Review:

I stepped into a comic book shop in the middle of Times Square. Midtown Comics, I believe it was. The place was crowded, shoulder to shoulder with the usual NY hustle and bustle. I managed to talk with someone that worked there, mentioned I was doing reviews of Dark Horse Books and was told that Criminal Macabre by Steve Niles with art by Ben Templesmith was what I was looking for.

Cal McDonald, ex-cop turned occult private detective is about as rare as they come. He’s the kind of guy that likes to drink, smoke joints, and pop pills while chasing down the likes of vampires, werewolves, zombies, & ghouls, etc.

While tracking a blood sucker, McDonald stumbles upon a massive plot between the vampires and werewolves mixing efforts to steal a rare strain of Bubonic Plague, run the population of Ghouls out of the sewers of Los Angeles, and change all life as we know it into Monsters.

Joined by Mo’Lock, McDonald’s best friend who also happens to be a Ghoul, and Lt. Brueger the supernatural doubting Thomas so to speak, they must find a way to stop the likes of the mysterious Maynard Crandall and his… “want to release what transformed him on the entire world.”

This book is a great read. Cal McDonald is an interesting character to say the absolute least, and the idea that he is a borderline alcoholic/drug addict monster hunter is just really different in a strange yet refreshing and demented way.

Steve Niles’ (30 Days Of Night / Freaks of the Heartland) continues to amaze readers with dark, moody content prefect for candelabra lit evenings. While the art of Ben Templesmith is just what the doctor ordered as a visual remedy to Niles’ scribe.
