What's up guys.

I am an aspiring rapper. I have been working on this idea for 10 years now. Mostly just toying with the idea, but I have decided to take a serious run for this. I am using Fruity Loops 10 for all of my music production. I know there are a lot of other programs out there, but fruity loops is the one I have access to. Would anyone with knowledge be willing to kind of tutor me in what I need to do to get my music sounding right? You can peep me out at http://www.reverbnation.com/Turna911

I know my timing is off a little... Working with rudimentary recording equipment as my local area has no options for recording. any help would be appreciated. If nothing else feedback on my lyrics would be great. I'm no pansy. If you're going to give feedback keep it real talk.

Do what you gotta do to get what you gotta get. Just don't do it to me or come after my shit.

What's here? I know of a few people with a set up, but no actual studios. Am I missing one?

as you say, no actual studios.  right now, anyway.  they never last long.

but there are options, is my point.  i managed.

gave a listen, and sure, there are a number of things you should address.

timing, yeah, but thats a performance issue.  practice, practice.

mic sucks.  or the preamping.  or sumn.  at any rate, vox are blown out.  could use an eq massage, too.

beats are 'fruityloopy'.  recommend you start building a sample library.  avoid using the presets and sample packs that flstudio starts out with, tremendously overused.  you can lean on the 808s and 909s, i spose, if youre one of those beatmakers that thinks those are the only drums in the world.

could go on, but thatll do for now.  i mean, it aint like its hopeless, or anything.

  awfully paranoid, arent you?

Therein lies the problem. I'm not "of of those beat makers" I am barely a beat maker. I switched mics a little while back. I cant tell which one is better so they probably both suck. I tried to do a little mixing myself. EQ, limiter, compressor... sounds a little better than the original but not by much. My cousin said that I could come over and he would help me out, but I don't really have the time for the drive there then record.

I will get this shit figured out.

as a novice, you should probably ignore compression for the time being.

start with mixing, gradually ease into effects [simpler shit first, reverb, echo/delays], and experiment with the recording process to the point where you can get the loudest possible takes with no distortion.

My cousin said that I could come over and he would help me out, but I don't really have the time for the drive there then record.

you should consider it.  plan well in advance, or whatever.

I just switched back to my old mic and tested it against the new one. I'm going back to the old one.

And i am wanting to get out there to do it, I feel like i need to get everything together first. My beats are barely music. And while my flow is getting better it, and my voice, still needs work.

Right now i am waiting to see what kind of stuff he gets recorded.

id try give you advice, but if your taking a serious run at being a working artist id probably fuck it up for you.

so instead of giving particularly bad advice about mixing your vocals/making beats ill tell you this. rape pillage and plunder. there is so many free beat packs (good ones too) and the ones that arent free you can steal (piracy ftw). also for now when your making beats stick with the basics kick snare kick kick snare on a 4 bar FLS loop. as you go youll figure it out.

you just gotta dig for it. i have about 20 or so different beat packs, yeah there are some double up samples but i have access to about 400 different kicks/snares/symbals and several thousand variants of instruments through VST's and such.

and if you give up on beats, sign up for the anno domini nation news letter. i got a   6 gig beat pack from his site for like 14 bucks. with lease distribution rights and such. while you learn to make beats its definitely a good idea. i also get week free beats from them. cant go wrong with it.As for you vocals. maybe approach a professional engineer. @leksisamisfit was doing free mixing/recording for people a while back. not sure if that is still happening but its a thought. if you suck at mixing your own shit, pay someone to make it not sound like a butthole.

other than that, good luck and i hope you have an actual job and arent trying to get paid in your first 5 minutes.

No I'm in it for the long haul. I'm just doing this for me. If it turns into something good then I'm cool with it. But right now I just want to be on a couple mix tapes and be heard a little.

I know this isn't something everyone can get rich off of. But if I get a small fan base then I'd be stoked.

That would be bad ass.

Ill add my 2 cents.

Dude, basically just start digging around Fruity Loops and start to learn it.  You have to get familiar with your DAW, like I mentioned go to that YouTube page and watch the videos for beginners.  Follow step by step, to be honest I'm more of a hardware beat-maker, but I did just recently get into FL 10 (That's why I know that YouTube page).  Trust me that guy kills it, that's the best advice you can get when it come to learning that DAW.  He's great at showing you step by step.  As far as mixing, you really need to do some reading/research on what exactly mixing is and what it does (Cutting and adding frequencies).  Learn what an EQ does, learn what compression is, google "how to structure beats".  There a TON of shit out there, if you really want to do this, than I'm assuming you've already done this....correct?

If you want to learn how to do ANYTHING - Google and YouTube my friend.  There's a lot of dudes in these forums that have massive music/mixing knowledge.  But just going to a forum would be my last choice on trying to really learn making beats.  Now get out there and fuckin impress ME!!!!!!!!!  haha

Happy beat making brotha!  cool

Yea, I checked out that channel. I actually watched quite a few videos last night. I have been using FL since about 2008 so i know my way around fairly well. the problem is how to use it. That dude is amazing.

Yes i have done a lot of looking stuff up. I have made some better beats than the ones i have in the songs posted. Unfortunately a lot of those were used in older versions of songs and the working file has been lost. the mixing stuff i am just trying to make my stuff sound better... i know i will never have the patience to master the craft.

Good man!  Glad you really checked out his page.  He teaches how to mix beats too, so watch those videos!  But you said it.......patience that's what it takes man.  Ill tell you what I do (this makes it much easier, I've been doing this for years).  Tell yourself that "today I'm going to learn just ONE thing".  It only really takes about 15-20 minutes everyday.  Try and just learn one thing everyday, get a good understanding of what your trying to learn too.  And that's it, just one fucking thing per day.  Trust me dude, I suffer from extreme ADHD and I cant concentrate for more that 30 minutes.  But doing it this way really helps, and once you start doing it, you'll be like OH SHIT!  I'm starting to kick some ass here!

Like today (for you), I'm going to exactly learn what an EQ is and does, watch some videos, go step by step, apply it to what your trying to do and then FUCKING BOOM!  MY beats just got a 1000% better sounding because I took the time and just learned what an EQ is!!!  I know it can be overwhelming at times, but I'm telling you from experience the One thing a day is awesome.  getclowned

I have done a lot of learning like that. My real problem is that i cant stay focused. I really want to figure out this beat construction bullshit. i get the basics for a good drum, but its all of the rest of it. damn ADD makes it to where if i get one thing sounding good i cant leave it alone, then i tinker with other shit until i have killed the sound and halted progress. so i just started looking at his chord progression videos. not sure how to use that for an upbeat song but i will get there

The beat needs work, with that main synth you wanna add something more to that same melody.  Maybe a dirty saw or some other crunchy lead to play along with that main melody.  Just gives it more of a bounce.  Also, the snare.  Gotta have more pop with that snare homie, the one you used is a good undertone to a hard clap.  I usually use 3 different snares, a Clap, rim and a normal 808 snare from the millions of choices.  Mix them together smoothly and slap just a tad of reverb and your golden.

I don't know. I hate the saw sound. I will tinker with it a little, but I like the way it sounds so I don't wanna mess it up by fucking with it

scrubb, all of that was creative matters.  only applies to your own creations.

except mixing.  but saying 'mix it smooth' means nothin, its rhetoric.
