Atheists need to learn the difference between religious establishments and God.  Then their arguments will be focused and able to be countered with logic.

That's why I don't like to debate that shit.  An Atheist holds one thing to be true: There is no higher power.  But the arguments always turn into bad things man has done in the name of God.  Ok, so people have killed and tortured over marijuana.  Does marijuana not exist now?  Is marijuana evil now?  No.  These arguments are counter productive.  I guess that's the difference between a debate and a message board argument.

I'm an agnostic athiest that takes a lot from everything especially Thelema and I'm just pointing out, I think it's the argument, that Christians do just as much evil as Muslims. And so do atheists. People in general are fucking nuts.

I find it stupid that people separate theism or religion from science. I feel that most people don't actually understand what science is. Science is the knowledge gained by observation. If you denounce science then anything you say means absolutely nothing and your beliefs can be dismissed as pure fairy tale. You can't have proof of shit if you don't believe in having proof. Religion and theism is science because it's scientific theory. Somebody looked up at the sky and through their observations they came up with the conclusion that some omnipresent being created it all. It is fact that science, the only true way to understand anything, has dis-proven majority of what is in holy books unless you take the escape route of saying that it's all metaphorical in which case what makes the bible any better than Harry Potter? Science has never dis-proven theism. Theism is still a valid scientific theory. All though I lean more towards the atheist side, I still have experienced some strange things that may support the idea of a being or force beyond our comprehension. I'm just not desperately searching for evidence to disprove or prove theism because my ego does not rely on how correct my beliefs are. I think, and this goes for any belief or ideology out there, that most people don't actually care about knowing the truth, they just care about what is going to back their beliefs up. Everybody wants to feel smart and special but being so reluctant to admit that you could be wrong, and this goes for both theists and atheists, just makes you look like an egotistical ass.

Oh, and I also think that it's stupid to try and preach that the Bible is the true word of god and all that because it has been changed so much over time to match up with modern day morality. I always hear that it's because the Bible was written by man and man makes mistakes. Then why follow a book that is written by fallible men? There are also many many people that pick and choose what parts of the bible to believe which is just fucking stupid. If you are going to pick and choose which parts are cool or not then why call yourself a Christian? Like, how can anybody preach that man should follow this one book because it is the true path to god if you pick and choose which parts to actually follow? That's just fucking lazy!

Also, I get it. When ever anybody comes up and starts forcing their beliefs on you it's annoying. (don't fucking act like atheists are the only ones that do it, that's just cherry picking) But when your only come back is, "typical atheist response" or "well look, another atheist trying to prove me wrong" it is just you side stepping the logical point the atheist made with an ad hominem attack. It does not count as a legitimate point.

'i dont have to care about your opinion, cuz youre goin to hell and im not.'

ive heard that, or somethin similar, many times.  always from a christian, never heard any variation from members of any other group, not even radical muslims [yeah, ive known some.  radicals, not terrorists].

should i automatically discount all christians' opinions, just because some of them are dipshits?

  awfully paranoid, arent you?

This thread sucks.  I have responses for everything, but I flat-out don't care enough to post them.  Here's a summary of what I'd like to say, but I'm not gonna write a novel here:

1. I dunno where krunkasfuk learned that the first step to science is rejecting God.  I know plenty of scientists that are religious.  As a Catholic in Catholic school and Jesuit High School, I was taught Evolution, Big Bang Theory, OTHER religions, and the Bible was taught to me for what it is: a book, written by men who claim to have spoken to God.  It is still subject to all flaws of man, including laws of their times, and conflicting accounts of what they experienced.

2. Typical Atheist Response, yes, because it is.  How can I argue with that?  In fact... it was an ad hominem right off the bat to me.  I was immediately told I was having a "reflex" that causes me to say "My God is better than your God," or something of the sorts... Step 1 to disproving God, apparently, is to tell someone they're too stupid (or stubborn, or both) to comprehend science.  Step 2 is telling me all my priests want to diddle my little boy parts.  Yeah, I been through this "debate" before.  Sorry if you don't like me dismissing your words for it, but you know what, if I had to care about all the people that used these "points" on me, I'd have a miserable life.

3. This debate is just not worth it.  You can't prove God exists, I can't prove he does.  That's the fucking definition of "faith."  If the existence of God was a fact, it wouldn't be faith, it would be fact.

4. Another common thing people say against religion is that it's used to control the people.  I hate to tell you all this, but they're using science in the same way now.  Global warming, ebola, pharmaceuticals, all that shit?  There's a reason why there's all sorts of info thrown at you. Because you're not able to discern the truth.  Sorry, but you're not.  Neither am I.  They give it to you in the most confusing way possible: Piece by piece, in blurbs, without any sort of explanation.  I guarantee none of you have ever read a scientific journal, and if you did, you didn't get it and had to have it explained to you or wikipedia'd everything on it.  (of course if you actually are a scientist, this doesn't include you).

So let me wrap it up by saying if you think Religion is anti science, I  think you're a fool.  If you think Religion is pro violence, I think you're a fool.  If you think the most atrocious examples of genocide and murder are doing what God told you, and not a glitch in someone's brain, I think you're a fool.

Image Enlarger

To be fair, the old testament promotes a whole lot of violence, genocide even. Yahweh commanded the Israelites to destroy entire cities. Every man, woman, child, and livestock. That's genocide, man.

I prefer the love your neighbor thing. If people believe that, I have not qualms. But if you're going to attack me or try and convert me, I will tell you how I feel.

I couldn't find where she said this.

I see science as a system of studying the nature of everything. If God is part of that, then I see no reason why science can't be a tool to assist in the understanding of God.

But in the end, @the_almighty_smack, as he revealed to us, is really God. I am surprised that he, in all his divine power, doesn't end the pointless evil and violence that we see in world. Maybe I need to pray harder to @the_almighty_smack.

Not trying to convert anyone.  I'd just like for people to stop accusing me of being anti-science, pro-violence, etc. etc.  Just how hard is it for people to meet me in the middle here?

A lot of people are lobbying to get creationism taught in schools. That's anti-science. Not saying you are, but there are religious people who are.

But hey, believe what you want man. Why should I care?

Your middle may not be another's middle. I don't reject god for science, I'm just not sensitive about religions as I think they're mostly for social control. I pray to god, row for shore, and try not to assume. Hail Xenu or whatever the fuck you say.

Oh, and

Oh, okay, so your comments weren't actually accusations of what people said, it's just you going off on shit that was inspired by the subject matter at hand.

Regardless, it is very shitty cherry picking inductive reasoning to dismiss all atheists as people who only bring those topics up as a way to dismiss god.

Krunkazphuk brought it up because she for saw a rant of how Muslims are violent degenerates and Christians are better. Not to disprove god, in fact she hinted that science might show the path to a higher power in the future (which is not debatable, even if the higher power is exactly as religion explained). She also never said that the first step to science was rejecting god. You're flat out putting words in people's mouths.

Actually, half the shit you accused people of saying in this debate didn't actually happen. Other than Krunkazphuk pointing out that Christians are just as violent as Muslims and that she thinks religion is used for social control.

I also find it silly when people claim that I need just as much faith to believe in science. You don't need faith to believe in the facts that are provided to you, no. You do need faith to believe in certain scientific theories, yes, but not to believe in science. Even then, we have tons of evidence to validate these theories. And no, most of it is not nearly as complicated as you make it out to be and many many people look to priests and preachers to help them understand and comprehend what the bible says. Cherry picking. The only difference is that you can easily poke holes in the logic of the bible and the bible forbids people from questioning it. You can not as easily poke holes in scientific theory even though they absolutely encourage it. That's the huge difference that says it all on the religion vs. science debate. Religion says, "Do not second guess me, I am the true path of knowledge, if you question me you shall burn for all eternity". Science says, "Second guess everything, you may be wrong, how do you know this is fact?".

And really, when you say that you have some really really good points but you don't want to take the time to explain them, I, and I'm sure most other people as well, are going to assume that you don't really have any points to make at all.

Learnin history and science, fuckin wait. Knowing that, will that put food on my plate?

Yes, J. If you are a historian, Social Studies teacher, engineer, or any number of other things. But I get what you're saying. For the blue collar floobs like myself, knowing those things doesn't directly aid in the quest for bill-paying green paper.

How was that response any better though?

Maybe there is no better response when comparing cultures, no 'more human than human.' Civilizations fall, but so far humanity hasn't. Muslims kept math & science alive through the Dark Ages, so maybe now it's someone else's turn to pay it forward.
