Juggalo Fired… For Being A Juggalo

So, this is pretty messed up. This was brought to my attention after a quick visit to Steve Miller’s “Juggalo: Insane Clown Posse and the World They MadeFacebook page. Apparently a parole officer in Virginia was fired for being a Juggalo.
She filed a grievance immediately afterwards which lead to a hearing. After discovering that her handbag had “Insane Clown Posse” written on it and that on her Facebook she basically identified as a Juggalette, “liking” things associated with ICP and Juggalos, they let her go.
The reason given for her firing was that she identified with a “security threat group.”

Although she fought it and lost, here is one important piece of information from the document that they really should have considered:

Grievant enjoys music of the Insane Clown Posse because of the “shock and awe of it.” She appreciates the philosophy of the band that if someone is an outcast in society, he or she can be a member of the Juggalos. In other words, if someone does not “fit in” elsewhere, he or she “can fit in with us.” She appreciates the “mass accepting” philosophy of the band and “representing the underdog.” She has appreciated the band’s music since 1997.
Grievant is not a member of a gang and does not engage in any gang related criminal behavior. She does not condone gang or criminal behavior. Grievant does not wear clown makeup at work. She does not discuss at work her interest in the Insane Clown Posse.

This… is discrimination, Juggalos.

While this is messed up, it’s not like Juggalos are a legally protected group when it comes to discrimination. She wasn’t fired for her age or gender or religion or anything like that. Employers should have rights too, this kind if thing varies from state to state and will cone down to where she lives. She probably should have expected this type of mentality when she considered entering the criminal justice field in the first place.

Virginia is an at-will employment state. That means employers can fire employees and any time for no reason. Why are there laws like this? That’s a whole other can of worms.
