Every year thousands descend on the swamplands of Ohio in the US for rap festival The Gathering of the Juggalos. Founded by hip hop duo the Insane Clown Posse, the gathering is home to their ‘Juggalo’ family, the name given to their intensely loyal and misunderstood fan community. And joining them at this year’s event to discover what it’s all about, BBC Radio 1’s very own Chris Stark.

Once wrongly classified by the FBI as a criminal gang and a threat to national security, the Juggalos are a fully-fledged cultural tribe with their own dress-code and ubiquitous greeting. At the gathering they dress-up in their finest clown outfits and extreme makeup for live hip hop, wrestling, tailgating and nudity alongside the most notoriously abusive festival crowd in the world.

Over its 17 year history the ‘gathering’ has seen an array of musical guests perform including Method Man, ODB, Busta Rhymes and Vanilla Ice. To fully immerse himself in the world of the Juggalos, Chris partners up with one of the gathering’s most famous faces ‘Mankini’. In a place where literally anything goes, Chris attempts to get down with the clowns and become a fully-fledged member of the Juggalo clan.
