Over the last six years, I kept hearing great things about the Electronic Dance Music scene, but I actually had never attended an event before. My first taste of Dub was DJ Skream, so I at least had that familiarity under my belt. Extreme curiosity of the greatness of an EDM show finally convinced me to go to one. That show turned out to be Borgore’s “Buygore Show” presented by Jagermeister. I had the seen name Borgore before, thanks to his Sumerian Records releases around 2011. So, at least I knew who he was, but didn’t know how wild Borgore shows could be. I was completely caught off guard, but I can say it was one of the greatest times of my life at a concert. Every Juggalo needs to experience this type of show at least once in their life. It’s super wild!
I walked into the Island Night Club and the first thing I witnessed were two EDM fans dressed in regular clothes making light saber sounds with giant glow sticks. They were reenacting the Star Wars scene from Empire Strikes Back, where Darth Vader reveals to Luke Skywalker the he is in fact his real father. Each time the sticks hit they would make the light saber sound effect. The guy acting out Darth Vader, could definitely pull off vader in an actual Star Wars film, for he sounded just like Vader. The guy playing as Luke Skywalker pulled his arm inside his sleeve, as a way to give justice to the scene where Darth Vader cuts off Luke’s arm and give onlookers a hilarious experience. The part with Luke Skywalker yelling “Nooooo”, was the highlight of laughter. The few watching applauded and The two guys went straight to the dance floor after that, as if nothing had even occurred.
On the dance floor, I witnessed lots of girls making out with other girls, people dancing around wearing giant hamster masks, people wearing glasses that flashed like seizure induced strobe lights, and a ton of light up Borgore inflatable tubes being flung around. The best thing to see was everyone jumping around clapping together all feeding off the same positive energy, while smiling ear to ear. Great big smiles at that! Everyone was having so much fun letting go of all their stress from the daily 9-5 life. It was a beautiful sight to witness, indeed. The venue looked to be way over the occupancy limit.
First to hit the stage was California’s Bad Royale. I had no clue who they were prior, but holy shit did the crowd go hard for them! They brought forth an addicting style of Reggae infused Trap Music that would make Bob Marley smile from the heavens. One minute you may feel like your very own soul is leaving your body to connect to the Rastafarian lifestyle and then all of a sudden, the bass drops and you’re losing your mind grinding your booty all across the dance floor! The crowd couldn’t get enough of Bad Royale and were left stunned, breathless and wanting more. According to Bad Royale, “We are 3 producers and an idiot. Our only dreams in life are to create awesome music, and to hunt sharks with machine guns from space”. Fucking awesome! I highly recommend not missing their set!
I instantly became a fan of Charlotte North Carolina’s Trap Music duo titans, “Styles&Complete”, when the first note hit. I knew right then that there was something special about these guys and that their stage show was going to be a major highlight of the night. I had an evil happy grin on my face for most of their set, while I was soaking up every beat greedily with my mind, as if my brain were plugged into an IPOD pirating the music live into my cerebral cortex. I honestly just wanted to hog the music of Styles&Complete all to myself! As selfish as that sounds, finding new electronic music that I really dig is almost impossible for me, as I’m a tough critic. My jaw automatically dropped when I first heard “Starstruck“, for the very first time that night. The beat and the production was just so awe-inspiring and the live showmanship the young DJs brought forth, during the performance of Starstruck was beyond impressive!
Another track I really admired live was “Legalize It”. I could literally feel my blood pressure drop from the positive vibes the song gave and when the drum n bass spot hit, the crowd went awol! The most hype the crowd went during Styles&Complete was for their track “Mad Dog”. The floor erupted in dancing chaos, as if people were dancing for their lives. Epic! The final verdict: Don’t miss a second of their set! I promise it will change your life.
Israel’s Borgore is the king of his genre and his live performance further proves no one can take his dubstep crown. I could tell by the way Borgore closed his eyes and demonstrated his superb mixing skills (he didn’t need to look at his equipment and performed with it by feeling out the energy of his music), that he is extraordinarily passionate about giving his fans the best show ever! What I liked most about Borgore live is him being able to sing and do a damn good job at it. His vocals captured real raw emotion. It’s honest, emotionally deep, and brings out the true side of Borgore. The crowd knew every single word and sang along throughout the entire set. I witnessed a fan waving the Israeli flag in honor of Borgore coming to Montana. The fan waved it high and proud all night long and I bet that made Borgore feel warm inside. It was an amazing sight to see!
I’m not exactly sure what happened, but in the middle of Borgore’s set the power cut off and the DJ took it like a champ and didn’t let the abrupt moment ruin his set at all. Fans cheered him on, and finally Borgore and his crew hooked up a new speaker, and the set finally continued. The situation seemed to give the audience a whole new level of energy as they rocked out even harder than before the power cut out. Borgore ended the night with Lamb Of God’s “Now You’ve Got Something To Die For”, bringing the dancing to a halt and welcoming the mosh pit. Song highlights judging by the crowd roaring included, “Decisions”, “Be Ourselves” and “Space Kitten Invasion”.
This show further reveals the fact DJs are never going to stop continuing to take over the music world, for they are the new Rock stars and they will forever shake any club to it’s core!
