John Sandford’s “Gathering Prey” novel uses the Gathering of the Juggalos in plot

I’ve been sitting on this story for a while, but finally got some more info about a book that recently came out.  A New York Times bestselling author named John Sandford has released several entries to his “Prey” novel series.  The 25th edition is called “Gathering Prey”, and is based around murders that happen at the Gathering of the Juggalos!

The book deals with a cult leader who murders people who attend the Gathering.  I haven’t read the book myself, but from what I understand, the killers don’t target Juggalos, but people who they refer to as “Travelers” who bounce from festival to festival.  There are scenes at three different Gathering locations in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan.

In a brand new article from the LA Weekly, journalist Chaz Kangas asks his father, who is a HUGE John Sandford fan, about the portrayal of Juggalos in the book.  It’s a good, unbiased opinion from someone who has little to no experience with Juggalos.  Here’s an excerpt:

Overall, would you say Gathering Prey’s description of Juggalos is a flattering portrayal?
They’re not the evil ones in the book. Pilate’s gang are the evil ones. They follow the Juggalos so they can make money selling drugs to them, and they take advantage of the travelers who enjoy doing things that the Juggalos do, but they don’t mess with the Juggalos as much as they mess with the travelers. But the Juggalos aren’t depicted as a criminal gang in this story at all. They’re just the event.

After reading the book, do you have any interest in going to one of the Gathering of the Juggalos?
Short answer, no. I rarely dress up in clown outfits.
