In Loving Memory of Jesus “Burrito Man” Ayala (1958-2014)

Rachel here. It is with a very heavy heart that I announce the passing of a Juggalo icon: Jesus Ayala, the Gathering of the Juggalos’ Mystical Burrito Man.

It is said that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. In this way, Jesus the Burrito Man touched the hearts of all who stumbled upon his tiny little truck nestled deep in the woods.

With over 30 years of restaurant and cooking experience, Jesus’s authentic burrito recipes became the stuff of Gathering legend. Adorned with hundreds of Juggalo tags and signatures, his makeshift kitchen nourished our bodies and our souls. Jesus’s burritos were phenomenal, but his friendship was even better. He will be mourned and missed by the entire Faygoluvers staff and the Juggalo Nation; we hold him in our hearts and memories for his humor, style, food, and friendship.

“You couldn’t ask for a better friend,” said Bruce Hull, Jesus’s culinary compatriot of over 15 years.

And indeed Jesus’s story was one of friendship til the very end.

During his final days, Jesus, 58, was suffering from congestive heart failure, with limited options as a noncitizen. He found himself in hospice care, given just a few short weeks to live. His only wish was to go home to Mexico: “I want to see my mom before I pass,” Jesus lamented to Bruce.

Filled with compassion for his friend, Bruce took it upon himself to make the Burrito Man’s last wish come true, taking up a donation and gathering enough money and resources to take the Burrito Man back home to Mexico. “You’ll die before you get an hour away from here!” the doctor protested, infuriated by Jesus’s resolve. But the bond of friendship and family was too strong, defying all “expert” medical advice. Before the medical staff could stop them, Bruce and Jesus were out the door and en route to the border. And with a little help from his friends, Jesus was granted his final wish. He spent just over two months in his beloved homeland with his mother and family before passing away peacefully on August 15th at 2:30 am.

“I know Jesus would have done the same for me,” Said Bruce. “He was my brother and my friend.”

Jesus is survived by his 6-year-old daughter Emily and his fellow foodies Bill and Bruce, who will be carrying on his legacy as the heirs of his coveted secret burrito recipe and truck, continuing to frequent the biker rallies and concert festivals that Jesus continually served with his amazing craft.

“The Juggalos were very, very special to Jesus. He loved you guys,” said Bruce. “He saw you as really nice people…just a little strange, is all.”

Goodnight, sweet Burrito Man. We love you, too. Here’s to extra sour cream in Shangri-leezey, wishes granted, and friends and family to guide your spirit home always.

Wow, that’s a trip. Been to GOTJ’s, but never met the man. Only know he’s a Gathering legend.

    R. I. P. Long live the “Jumbo Combo” burrito. To this day, probably the most worthwhile $5 I’ve ever spent on food. Looks like Jesus beat us all to the 2015 GOTJ, he’ll be waiting there for us. Much love
