The term “Horrorcore” was coined in the early 90’s to describe a sub-genre of Rap music that had a more evil tone. Most people don’t actually like the term “Horrorcore” because it was created by major record labels and the media in order to market it. Although it is still the blanket term that most people use, nearly all “Horrorcore” music is underground, so many artists avoid categorizing themselves as “Horrorcore”. Other variations are “Acid Rap”, Death Rap” or “Wicked Shit”. Some of the themes in the music revolve around extremely gruesome murder, disease, excessive drug use, satanism, cannibalism, perverse sexual acts, necrophilia, suicide, vandalism and all the good stuff in life. Much of it is actually very political and many songs touch on serious social issues. Many people think that this music causes anti-social and violent behavior, but I disagree completely. As someone who really enjoys this music, I actually find it more therapeutic than influential. It is like an audio version of a horror film and exposes all the real shit that happens in our world that the news feeds us daily, yet for some reason the music industry tries to censor and sweep these issues under the rug. Lyrically, it could be considered the Death Metal of the Rap world, and the fan base is equally as die hard and obsessive.
