After going through one of the darkest periods of their musical career, Swollen Members are back and sounding more revitalized than ever.  With Mad Child now free from his addiction to pain killers and having exorcised all his demons, he has returned to Swollen Members with a vengeance to record their seventh studio album “Dagger Mouth”. From the powerful production of Rob The Viking to the dark poetic abstract expressionism of Madchild and Prevail, “Dagger Mouth” is a return to the classic Swollen Members sound by harnessing the group’s savage and chaotic energy into one focused and commanding effort.  Swollen Members had developed such a powerful fanbase they were touring the world opening for everyone from Black Eyed Peas to Tech N9ne and collaborating with the likes of Nelly Furtado, Everlast, and Chali 2na (Jurassic 5).

Swollen Members released their latest effort, Brand New Day, a follow up to their 2013 album, Beautiful Death Machine on June 17, 2014.

Track by track review and rating

Intro- Short Intro.  N/A

Nemesis- A smooth old school beat backs solid verses from both member of the group.  Madchild leads off and gives listeners a very smooth and composed verse.  Prevail comes in second and keeps the flow going flawlessly.  4/5

Blood Sport- This track has a stripped down but very complex beat.  Prevail leads this track off with a quick and deliberate flow.  Madchild and Prevail split the second verse very well with each showing how their varied styles complement each other.  4.5/5

Cock Blocker- This track was one of the singles released prior to the album’s release.  This track has yet another stripped down beat.  This allows the verses to be heard clearly.  A solid hook intertwines well written verses and makes this track easily enjoyable even though it is over 4 minutes long.  4/5

Brand New Day- The title track of the album leads off with a hook performed by a kid style voice but it works in this track.  The tone of this track is very positive and uplifting.  The verses are well written and performed.  This track is slightly less enjoyable as a few previous tracks but it does not bring the flow of the album down at all.  3.75/5

Angel of Death- A much darker beat and theme hits here.  A much shorter track but that works at this point.  The verses are very tight and the fact there is a minimalistic hook makes this work.  3.5/5

Jacques Cousteau Ft DJ Makeway- A much more hard hitting beat in this one.  Madchild attacks his verse and that just adds to the hardness here.  Prevail lets his verse shine as well in this one.  4.5/5

Supernova Ft DJ Revolution- This track is led in by a clever Star Wars sound bite.  A smooth and simple beat shifts the tone of the album here.  The hook is also very simple and rounds the track out well.  4/5

Odd Goblins- The levels in this track are off.  The music drowns out the lyrics in the verses for the most part.  There are parts where the beat cuts out and we can hear the lyrics well but that is sporadic at best.  The hook is simple and easy to catch on to.  3/5

Park Bench- Back to simple beats with this one.  The verses are all Madchild and all very simple in composition.  The theme of the track works here.  3.75/5

Power- This track brings the hard hitting beats back.  The hook matches this tone well.  The verses are nicely done.  Once again their opposing styles play well with one another.  This track brings the album back to a more positive note.  4/5

Creatures of Evil- This beat is very busy and distracts from the lyrical content.  The beat also shifts throughout the album.  The verses are solid and well written and performed.  4/5

Jackson Pollock Ft DJ Makeway- An old school vibe and solid DJ scratching rounds out the beat in this track.  Madchild leads the track and does well with his flow around this complex beat.  Prevail delivers a slower verse but it counters the first verse well.  4/5

Cold Sweat- This beat reminds listeners of an Alfred Hitchcock film soundtrack.  While the beat is simple the piano backing is very frantic and busy.  The verses flow slowly around this hectic sound.  A solid hook works here.  3.5/5

Still Kill- A much slower old school beat hit in this one.  Madchild leads this track once again and it really sets it off on a huge positive.  A nice way to end the album.  4/5

Overall Album Rating: 3.89/5

Conclusion-  A much different album than “Beautiful Death Machine.” It has a lot of old school beats and the verses are nicely done throughout the album.  Some listeners will see this as a step back from that album but most fans of the group will find it very entertaining.  A recommended pick for those who enjoy what Swollen Members has done for over a decade and a half.
