Stevie Stone, who grew up in Columbia, Missouri, is based in St. Louis. He discovered a love of music through his mother, a singer and choir director who introduced the rapper to gospel, blues, and soul at an early age. As he grew up, Stone had his feet in the worlds of music and sports, pursuing a basketball career and playing piano and drums.  Though he received an offer to play ball for a junior college in Iowa, he was asked to open at a show just weeks before he would leave for school, and he chose to focus on his rap career.  In 2007, Stone signed with Ruthless Records, which released his debut, New Kid Coming, on September 29, 2009.  Not long afterwards, the MC left the label to sign with Tech N9ne’s Strange Music.  On June 12, 2012, his second studio album Rollin’ Stone was released.  On October 23, 2012, he released an EP titled Momentum.  On August 13, 2013, his third studio album 2 Birds 1 Stone was released.

Track by track review and rating

  1.  Intro- Short Peel Out.  N/A
  2. 2 Birds 1 Stone- This track has a solid hard hitting beat and an aggressive sound.  The verses are as aggressive as the beat and flow really well.  The hook while simple works really well here.  8/10
  3. Get Out My Face Ft Krizz Kaliko- The beat in this track is a lot slower than the first and has a ton of effects and sounds mixed into it.  The hook is way too simple and could have benefited from having no voice effects.  Krizz Kaliko adds a nice verse to the track.  This track is a take it or leave it track.  6/10
  4. The Reason Ft Spaide Ripper- Another slow beat in this one but it works here.  The flow and delivery in the track makes the beat work very well.  The hook is once again simple but in this track it works well.  8/10
  5. Grave Digga- A nice change of pace with the addition of a piano in the beat.  While the hook leads the track it is a long time before the verses start.  Once the verses kick in they are well written and very dark.  The hook and verses work with this beat.  7/10
  6. In My Zone- This beat contains quite a bit of synthetic sounds.  The hook is very simple.  The verses are recorded and performed very well but the content is lacking in this one.  7/10
  7. Relentless- The trend of slow hard hitting beats continues here.  The verses are pointed and intended to tell a story.  This track has a ton of hood/street in it.  The hook is tight and delivers here.  9/10
  8. Hush Ft Brotha Lynch Hung & Kutt Calhoun- The beat in this blends into the rest of the CD and the listener will find one track bleeding into another.  The delivery of the verses and the addition of Brotha Lynch Hung and Kutt Calhoun are a welcomed change.  7/10
  9. Phases Ft Krizz Kaliko- The second track on the album that features Krizz Kaliko.  The beat is slightly too simple but fits well with Krizz Kaliko’s sound.  This track easily could have been on his last release Son of Sam. Overall the track works and is a good change of tone here.  The verses work and the hook fits.  9/10
  10. Indigo Ft Wrekonize & Bernz of Mayday- This track is definitely a smoker’s track.  The beat has a guitar backing and simple beats.  The tone and sound is much more shill than anything else on the album.  Wrekonize and Bernz are a good change of pace in the verses.  8/10
  11. Boomerang Ft Krizz Kaliko- This song hits on a theme of relationships.  The beat is good and works well with the verses and hook.  Most listeners have been involved in a relationship similar to the one described in this track.  8/10
  12. Boo Thang Ft Darrien- While the beat is alright in this one, the tone of this track in no way fits with this album.  The whole track plays like a mainstream love song.  The verses are really well done but the hook falls way short.  6/10
  13. She Go- A head bobbing beat drives this track.  The verses are simple but for a twerk track it is what you would expect.  A good club or live performance track.  7/10
  14. Let It Beat- The simple beats continue here.  The verses don’t really stand out and the hook is average at best.  6/10
  15. The Baptism ft Tech N9ne & Rittz- A slightly more complex beat leads this track.  Tech and Rittz add killer verses to this otherwise bland track and increase the rating.  The hook is lackluster and could have been much more.  7/10
  16. 10 O’Clock Jump Ft Jarren Benton- The beat is complex but it works well here.  The horns are a nice touch.  The verses are very different here and it makes this track really enjoyable.  Jarren Benton adds his verse but Stevie Stone makes this track worthwhile.  Overall a nice way to end this album.  8/10

Overall Rating: 7.4/10

Conclusion:  This album is another solid release from Strange.  While it falls short of other Strange Music releases (Son of Sam, We All Fall Down, and Something Else) it holds up to those very well.  Stevie Stone’s delivery stays the same in a few too many tracks leaving the listener wanting a change.  The beats throughout the album are very well done.  The featured artists all bring their own styles and flavors.  If you are a fan of Stevie Stone you will receive this album well.  If you are a new fan it is definitely worth a listen to see if you dig his style.
