Skrapz has returned finally with his Very-Long awaited 2nd solo album “Way Better Than You”. Another classic hip hop experience from one of Detroit’s OG’s. A little history of Skrapz just in case nobody’s heard of him. He started off in a group alot of ya’ll might have heard once or twice called 2 Krayzie Devilz alongside the man now known as Blaze Ya Dead Homie. Then after Blaze and Twiztid went to Psychopathic, Skrapz joined ROC (SoL at the time) to become the “Nu” House Of Krazees which later became HaLFBrEEd, one of Horrorcore’s biggest groups (their full length debut album “KontaimiNATION” is still in print and available so go look for it at your local CD store and get infected by the virus on the CD!) to come out of Detroit in the late 90’s. After HaLFBrEEd’s end ROC and Skrapz along with Dialtone (who was Mr. FrEEzE at the time) became Level Jumpers.  Then after ROC went to Psychopathic in 2003 Skrapz launched a new label in the ashes of the label Virus Independent (the label that put Strange’s Prozak on the map when he was part of the horrorcore group Bedlam!) called Genetic Soil LLC, which is now Barely Therapy Sounds. In 2005 he released his first solo LP titled “The 12 Step Program” which was hyped as far as 2002 in the liner notes of the final HaLFBrEEd album “The End”. Now nearly 7 years later we finally hear the 2nd solo album from Skrapz.

Way Better Than You“‘s album concept and meaning is of an “ego trip”, but is also a word of logic and thinking when compared to rappers now today, who think they’re the greatest thing in rap since Kool Herc vs Grandmaster Flash (the rap battle that started it all for hip hop back in the 70’s). The album’s lyrics and concept continues Skrapz move from the Wicked Shit to Alternative Hip Hop. Skrapz once again takes the production helm for a big chunk of the album. The song “Eat You Alive” throws on a marathon mode of syllables and rhymes so complex and intriguing that it makes 90% of the rap you hear on the radio and see on MTV sound like complete shit! Skrapz’s superb songwritting and lyricism is displayed on this entire album. “Where can I go” sounds like a throwback Detroit early 90’s beat (the kind Esham was doing back in the day) but laced with modern day drum kits and kicks. The beat is very good to relax on a nice stroll around the town or just chillin’ at the beach. I was wondering if we were gonna have multiple MC’s throwing down rapid-fire style on this record, then “Time Share” (ft. Abrasive Method, Dial81 (Dialtone), Intricate Dialect, Mobil Home, Progress Report & Subverse) hit. The song is just a crazy ass throwdown of multiple MC’s over a really nice throwback beat that takes me back to the old school days of the late 80’s/early 90’s when I heard a rap for the first time. This song is a highly recommended bump in the trunk song! “Madness” gives you a mix of the new Skrapz with the old Skrapz from the “HaLFBrEEd” days. The song’s mainly about the aftereffects of all sorts of drugs. Sounds like a trip if I ever took one. The album closes with a song called “What U Want” which is a strange track that kinda hints that Skrapz still has a soft spot for his wicked shit roots as far as the beat and lyrics go. That’s just my opinion. You guys can judge how you want once this review is finished.

All in all “Way Better Than You” is a very thump-worthy record that any rap lover can throw into his system and just get wowed. I’ve been following the guy for many years going back to HOK‘s “The Night They Kame Home” and it’s been one hell of a journey for Skrapz. He deserves alot more credit in the underground. I recommend this album rather you download it or order the autographed CD. So enjoy!

It’s not quite the classic that is “The 12 Step Program”, but for what it is, it’s pretty fuckin’ dope. And for $FREE.99
