Violent J. kept it on the downlow for a long time, but he had been planning
out Psychopathic Records invasion into an entire new level, a whole new
genre, Juggalo Rock! He knew it was possible, and one day by chance came
across the man who could help him make it happen. And that person was Mike
Puwal, better known to juggalos as Mike P. Mike and J began brainstorming
about how they could make this project work. Mike knew the singer had to be
a longtime friends of his we all know as Syn. He brought Syn in front of
Psychopathic Don Violent J and Syn amazed everyone in the room with his
vocal intensity and the project had a voice. Soon later they gathered
several great musicians from the Detroit area and they had Lil' Pig on the
drums, Guido on Bass Guitar, Mike P on lead guitar, Dan Miller on keyboards,
and Syn as the heart of the band, lead singer. After forming the band they
needed a name. They gathered and came up with naming them after polluted
downriver area of Detroit Zug Island. After discovering their was already a
band named Zug Island and they altered the spelling to Zug Izland.
Zug Izland was first exposed to the juggalos on the Internet on ICP's
website. Violent J. announced the band and gave them all outrageous gimmicks
such as a retarded backwoods redneck drummer, a serial killer meat butcher
keyboard player, and a fugitive bassist. Later all of the far out gimmicks
would be forgotten. But the website released the song "The River." A poetic
song written by Violent J and performed by Zug Izland. Juggalos were weary
about the new style, but few enjoyed the song. Then "Prison Song" was
released a week later. It was a powerful song from the viewpoint of a prison
inmate performing for his peers. The inmate sings the tale of his mother's
wrongdoings leading to him murdering her, and claiming that he would "do it
again." The song had very violent content and was enjoyed by more than
before. Then they released "Sunny Day" a huge zuggalo(as the fans became
known) hit. The song was well-written and was about relationships and
eventually dealt with suicide. Many juggalos flocked to Zug Izland after
hearing this song.
Even more juggalos flocked to Zug Izland after seeing them live for the
first time on the Mirror Mirror Tour. Zug Izland live is an incredible
experience second to none. They've opened shows for King's X, Dope, Esham
the Boogieman, and performed at radio festirvals with Saliva, Tommy Lee, and
many more. Zug Izland was also featured on various Psychopathic Records
albums before they released the debut album "Cracked Tiles." Juggalos fell
in love with songs like "Suicide," "Hiroshima," Lost Boys cover "Cry," and
"Fire." Shortly before the album was released it was announced Guido could
no longer maintain the touring schedule due to medical treatment for a brain
tumor he had removed. B. Nestor Hendricks a friend of Lil' Pig's joined the
band for awhile. However as the band prepared to release the followup record
"3:33" they parted ways with B. Nestor and Dan Miller both. Guido played
Nestor's position in a recent show but said he wouldn't be touring with the
band. Shortly after Zug Izland released "3:33" they introduced us to two new
musicians.
One was Rex Hamilton, a bass player from the Detroit area. And a drummer by
the name of Detro Fernino. They have yet to be announced as fulltime
replacements since the band insists that Lil' Pig is now, and always will be
a zug thug. These two have joined Zug Izland at all of their recent shows
including this years Gathering of the Juggalos. Zug Izland are still
planning to tour in support of the new album, "3:33," and are already
beginning work on another project to be released on Ax & Smash Records.
As of September 27th, 2004, Zug Izland and Psychopathic Records parted ways. Zug Izland will continue touring and working on new material, so don't think that they're going away! We at FLH will also continue to support them, so much Zug Luv!
